Hello all
I've been a long time member of the samba as an early Beetle and Karmann Ghia owner, but I have recently acquired my first Porsche, a 1964 356SC. I'm trying to track its history but I know it was an Italian delivery to Bologna, then at some point prior to 1992 it came to the LA area in California where it lived until being shipped to Australia in 2006.
It was originally fitted with a metric speedo for the Italian market, but this was replaced with an imperial MPH speedo in its time in the US. I'd like to find a metric speedo for it again as Australia has been metric for years. Is there any difference between the A,B and C speedos? I'd like to get a date as close as possible but can't be too fussy, the car was actually built in late 1963 according to the Kardex.
Thanks in advance, have a 120MPH speedo for trade!

Does it have blinker lights on the side of the fender in front of the door? |

From my top California expert:
KPH speedos are available, but you may be hunting the internet for a long time or paying premium. It is also possible for him to send his current gauge to one of (3) VDO guage specialists that I know who could convert it to KPH...they replace the face and restore the guage. |

Sorry for late response, I missed the notification somehow. No it doesn't have any lights on the front guard. _________________ 1963 Australian Delivery RHD Coupe

I actually tried ringing the last owner of the car in LA who had recorded that he changed it out. I held faint hope that he still had it, but no luck there. I have managed to find one in Australia, and your expert was right, it wasn't cheap! Not unreasonable though, and it makes for simpler driving in a metric country. _________________ 1963 Australian Delivery RHD Coupe

the odo would still be counting in miles, so that would need to be converted as well.
There is are small differences between A/ Bt5 and Bt6/ C gauges. on the early ones the cable is routed differently and attaches to the speedo in the center rear of the gauge, on the later cars it comes out at an angle on the bottom.
On early cars the so-called green zone is different as well. On a euro gauge for a C or SC it is from 50-60kmh where it is from 40-60km/h on earlier (non carrera) cars.
I have a km/h gauge for your C if you are still looking. |

Yes the odometer in miles put me off just putting a decal over the face. I think I have found a metric speedo here in Australia, it is dated '64 so hopefully will be correct. Thanks for your offer, if the one I'm getting doesn't work out I will get back to you. I know someone else who may be interested also, I'll let him know provided I don't need it! _________________ 1963 Australian Delivery RHD Coupe
