What am I missing here?

The shifter rod was taken out by a friend while I was over seas for whatever reason, and I'm missing something. There are a ton of different styles, years, parts, doodads, and other adapters. The front half of the shifter rod is hollow (and not threaded on the interior) with what looks like a standard nose on the transaxle.

Is this what I need?

Yes. Weld the adjuster to the shift rod then the coupler hooks them together.

That's what I was afraid of.. I cant weld it, unless I take it somewhere.

You could easily get away with getting the adapter, then drill a through hole (JUST big enough to get a bolt through - like maybe 1/4-20) and run in a bolt with a locking nut. Obviously you will remove the coupler that is on it now.

But I am wondering if your shift rod just ran through the coupler and the screw was just cranked down on it..

that was my thought (using a pin).

I don't remember what was here before I left it, but the shift rod isn't long enough to reach the trans. the gap there is as close as it gets, so I *assume* I'm missing something.

Almost get the impression that there is a threaded insert in shift rod end and you are only missing the threaded shaft/ insert to coupler and locking nut....

Is there threads internal to shift rod?

Dale
He had said that it was NOT internally threaded in his 1st post.

it looks like you have an early coupler on there now the pic on dales post is what you need but you will have to weld it on bolting it will restrict you from being able to adjust the linkage to shift properly into all the gears

Maybe you could rig something like my poor man's shortening and adjusting hose clamp'd sheet metal wrap:

Don't laugh too hard, it has work'd just fine for over 4 decades (after some initial adjustments, way back in 1976).

Comment - what you dont want to do is just drill a hole through the shift rod to connect the late style coupler through....The hole will wear and shifting will be sloppy. Get the adapter and bolt that in as I indicated.

Pull out shift rod, and get threaded adjuster and truck on down to locaf fab shop and ask them to braze or weld it.....

Coupler you have is not VW looks more like a dirty urethane coupler or maybe steel...

You want this type coupler if you use adjuster I pictured in earlier comment...

OK I'm an idiot, it IS threaded on the inside. I just need a threaded adjuster and the U shaped connector you posted here, correct?

Either one (early or late) just be sure threaded portion that goes into shaft has correct end for what your coupler of choice is.... I personally prefer the early donut style, but others prefer the box style...

If the coupler with the 2grub screws is steel, keep it, its bullet proof and I've used one for 20+ years. Nothing wears out, nothing moves, set it and forget it.
