|
|
I have a 1965 Bug with 66-67 5 lug wheels (got them years ago and had them widened) for my then 67. I am using them on a 65 I am restoring but when I got in the 66-67 hubcaps they are too shallow to fit on the driver side front wheel because of the speedo bearing cap sticks out too far.
Any suggestions? Really hate to have to buy new wheels and hubcaps. _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life. |

Embrace the "outlaw" racer look, the '66-'67 wheels look the best for this as they didn't use clips to hold the hubcaps on & the wheels were lighter due to the holes. They were the preferred stock wheel for the Formula Vee racecars. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I’m guessing that’s your car in photo gallery. Nice and there’s a good shot of the wheel. |

Looks like my best solution is to return the 67 hubcaps for 65's (moons), get some hubcap clips install them on these wheels and grind down the existing hubcap mounting nubs.
At least this is the cheapest solution. Have spent so much on this restoration wife will kill me if I tell here I need 600.00 worth of new wheels. _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life. |

I had a similar situation on a pair of rear widened 66/67 wheels.. Flat caps would hit the axle before seating.. (68 longer spline axles)
You can grind off some of the cable tit end too..
Does the right side fit?
Not sure how much yours requires... but..
I took the 66/67 caps.. and banged on them with a rubber mallet dead center from the back.. until they cleared..
Maybe 1/4 inch...
Worked fine for mine..then... circa 2013
Unless you had one side by side..off the car.. it was not even noticeable.

who knew Walmart sold classic VW wheels (@ Walmart Prices). I am looking for some to powder coat black so the beauty rims and hubcaps pop. These are 5.5 in wide so will take the tires I have.

^ :fist: Walmart....
Grind some of the cable end off as I mentioned.. .. it may go..
You can also grind some of the cap off (top side) to help seat the cable lower..
Just spitballing ideas.. .
I dont like to spend money if I don't have to either..
Nipple caps.. . good thought Sharp.. But I dont think they fit the 66/67 wheels
Think Porsche ..
They could be bought in the 80's with either Porsche or Wolfsburg emblems..
I always digged them.. still have 2 sets ...

If the needed clearance isn't much, then on a similar note suggested earlier but going with the cheaper and less visible part, use a hammer to knock the hub grease cap in enough to get the hubcap on. You could even pair this with the idea to grind the end of the cable, though this way much less material would need to come off. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

60ragtop on driver side almost an inch. Think I may just grind down nubs on 67 wheels and install clips for moonies _________________ I love this analog addition to my over digitzed life. |

How about grinding off the cap like suggested and dimpling in the dust cap where the square hole is?
Is there that much difference in a K&L front drum and a BJ drum? _________________ Rick

The outlaw look is a good idea, but the drums would have to be painted say black to give it the look? Cheapest option though. |

I agree on the outlaw look. But I’m a bit biased
