NAHT 1985 with Bostig conversion (new trans from German Transaxle) - $25k

This looks like a really nice build out, if the engine, rust, and transmission are in great shape this seems like an awesome turnkey setup.

https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/d/vw-vanagon-high-top/6522555403.html

From AD:
It is with great sadness that I am offering my awesome VW Vanagon, "Frida" up for sale. I've owned Frida for two years, and have logged about 17,000 miles on her during that time. Selling because I'm barely in the country any more these days and I feel awful every time I put this van in storage. Feels like I'm making a mistake selling this but anyways...

The details:

1985 Vanagon GL Bostig Adventurewagen Hi-Top

267k body miles
80k on the 2.0L Ford Zetec engine
30k on the transaxle+clutch (rebuilt by German Transaxle)

Drivetrain:
-Bostig RG5 engine conversion kit
-Bostig high capacity oil pan
-Bostig 1/4" plate steel engine skid plate
- engine is 2.0L Ford Zetec. Love this motor. This particular one came from a 1999 Ford Contour with 50k miles. Timing belt and most gaskets were replaced before installation. Perks of the engine include - better gas mileage and more power than the stock waterboxer, easier to find parts (just walk into any auto parts store), it's a non-interference engine, OBD-II so it's easy to troubleshoot, and if the engine failed for any reason (heaven forbid), low-mileage replacements can be found in pick-n-pull yards all across the country for $300-500.
-SCT X4 Scanner and datalogging tool
-SCT Ultragauge heads up display/monitor

Suspension/wheels:
-Gowesty Progressive lift rear springs
-Moog front springs
-Rancho adjustable shocks
-Burley upper control arms
-Polyurethane Bushings all around
-T3 Technique front swaybar
-16" South African black steel wheels
-215/70/16 Yokohama Geolandar AT/S tires

Body/Exterior:
- NAHT Adventurewagen high top (6' interior standing height)
- Gowesty Front Bumper w/ 2" hitch receiver, Hi-Lift jack mounted
- Custom steel rear bumper with 2" hitch receiver
- 8-foot Rhino Awning mounted with Gowesty brackets
- Dual rear swingaways with spare tire mount on one side, Aluminess galley box on the other.
- Lower part of the van as well as the high top has been rhino lined
- H4 round headlights for low beams
- Auxbeam led high beams
- Auxbeam 52" led light bar (on a three position switch on/off/wired to high beams)
- LED auxiliary reverse lights
- All brake, side marker and turn signal bulbs have been switched to LED bulbs, with the LED flasher relay installed

Camper Build/Interior:
- Renogy 150W Monocrystalline Solar Panel
- Renogy 30-Amp PWM Charge Controller
- 125 aH Sealed AGM House Battery
- Blue Sea fuse panel/circuit breaker
- 900-Watt power inverter
- VanagonLife locking steel center console (battery kill switch mounted inside, so you can disable the starting mechanism for the van)
- Weekender Z-Bed
- Fantastic Fan air vent w/ remote control
- Custom Kitchen Cabinet (not amazing craftsmanship I apologize, but very functional). Has large pull-out vertical and horizontal storage drawers.
- Whynter 45L Portable Fridge/Freezer mounted on a slide
- Camp Chef Everest Stove mounted to countertop (has quick-disconnect wingnuts so you can cook outside if the weather is nice)
- Custom sink cabinet with Shur-Flo faucet
- Dual Tank 5-gallon water storage w/ quick connectors (nice and easy to swap tanks once one runs dry)
- LED Interior Lights
- Warm yellow LED Dash Lights
- Uniden CB Radio
- Kenwood CD/Media player and speakers
- Dynamat over the entire rear section of the van
- Sew-Fine full curtain set ($$$)

Maintenance since I took ownership:
Oil changed every 5000 miles
04/16 (250k) - new front brakes/replaced front wheel bearings
05/16 - new power steering rack
06/16 - New fuel tank, fuel level sending unit, fuel pump, fuel lines
06/16 - New radiator and thermostat
06/16 - Engine mounting cradle replaced under warranty (thanks Bostig)!
08/16 - New spark plugs/wires
03/18 - Brand new main battery
03/18 - Fresh oil change, will also perform coolant flush and transaxle fluid exchange before sale.

Pros:
- Incredibly capable on and off road. Good ground-clearance. This van has gone places!
- Turning radius is incredible, this thing will whip around on a two-lane road, no problem.
- The absolute maximum interior space for the minimum exterior space. Fits almost everywhere, easy to park in the city.
- Simple and functional interior camper layout makes it easy to wait out bad weather or just chill out inside.
- Once I worked out the kinks and finished the build that the previous owner started, this thing has been incredibly reliable. Would not hesitate to drive this thing cross-country
- Has character! Not just another white Sprinter van. Easier and much cheaper to work on as well.
- Non-interference type engine. This sounds like a minor, nerdy detail, but if you plan on going on a really really long expedition (South America, anyone?), this could save your butt. Unlike Subaru-converted Vanagons, the Zetec is a non-interference type engine, so if (heaven forbid) the timing belt were to snap, your engine simply stops working until you install a new belt and reset the timing and off you go. Were the same thing to happen on a Subaru engine, the pistons would slam into the heads and you would need a new motor. Not easy to find a replacement 2.5L Subaru H4 in Argentina, much easier to find a 2.0 Zetec.
- Decent gas mileage (16MPG in traffic, 24MPG on the open road)
- Great customer service through Bostig, the engine conversion company. Jim is available to answer questions, and can diagnose problems through datalogs and send you tune files for your ECU and whatnot.

Cons:
- Definitely not a car-show queen (I actually kind of appreciate this). Has a dent on the sliding door. No frame rust, but a few scratches that went down to the metal that have a bit of surface rust. Absolutely nothing cancerous, no bubbling paint or rotting window seals or anything. What little surface rust has not increased since I took ownership of the vehicle.
- I have never bothered to hook up the A/C
- Not the fastest ship on the highway (65mph is comfy, 70 is reasonable but mileage suffers, 75 is kinda noisy).
- Interior standing height is only 6'0". I'm 6'2".
- If I were to keep it, I would probably install carpet on the cargo areas, and swap out the weekender bed for a Westy bed+closet setup, but that's just personal preference.

Email or call, I'd love to talk about the rig and I'm happy to show it to you any time. Serious inquiries only, please.

Put my Subaru engine back in after changing out all the csm seals, a new timing belt, and all the valve guide seals. Oh, and a clutch and a new slave cylinder.

Gotta get going for camping season.

A 1991 double cab Doka Syncro diesel on EBay:
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F202257113453

I’m not saying it’s a good deal but it’s an interesting van.

A 1986 Syncro with locker on the Seattle CL for $9,500. Looks pretty decent, but we all know seeing pictures and looking at it in person could be two very different things.

Hi Samba - long time lurker, first time poster... thinking of offering 25k for this 1982 Bostig Westy. Curious what you folks think of the post and the price. Good deal on nice van?

He has a lot of decent stuff in there. Wheels are a no go for me. Definitely didn't expect that interior when looking at the exterior.

There are 4 things I like about the van.

The seats look like specialist Ms? Not quite $4400 theres a guy in poland does them with armrests for $2600-2900.

The Norcold fridge. It is 3 way... but I guess off is 4 way?

I like the swap but it seems like it would be pretty heavy with all that wood/tv accessories.

The exterior looks clean and sharp but hard to tell the picture quality is weird.

I can't say I would spend 25k for it but he seems to have done most of the leg work.

This is a chilling statement:

"2 tvs one flat above head while laying down one in front can play while driving "

Jesus.

Jake, yup, that is worth praying over. My sister used to read a novel while driving on the freeway.... Now shes got a 9 inch piece of metal holding her femur together. The two weren't necessarily related, but just sayin' kids who do that kind of stuff are not thinking very clearly anyway.

I once saw a woman reading a Kindle while driving on an interstate. Risking your own life is fine by me. When you risk others, I honk and flip the bird.

When you make your own westy there are so many considerations and so many skill sets needed.
Those cabinets look great but the fronts are clearly milled out of 4/4 maple. VERY heavy.
I have to wonder how much the guy was thinking about safety also and if he had the knowledge to evaluate his own plans in that respect.
