bvolks, thanks for the GTi ad! When I was in college in Potsdam NY near the Canadian border in '79, I went to a VW dealer in Cornwall, Ontario and saw such a GTi in the showroom. All dressed up like a German-model GTi, built in Wolfsburg, except it had the same 1600cc 76hp engine as US-spec Rabbits. I bought a Rabbit GTi hatchback logo from the parts department and put it on my American-built '79 Rabbit. When I went to Germany 2 years later and worked for the VW factory, I treated myself to a genuine '82 Golf GTi with the 110hp engine.

Guy at a car show stopped at my Beetle and told me how much fun they had as kids stealing the hood crests off Beetles. I could only smile politely.

Click to enlarge, it's a big photo.
One of the things that always strikes me in these early photos is how few VWs I see relative to huge American cars. In my memories of the 60s and 70s I swear that I remember every fourth car being a Beetle. I guess those memories aren't as accurate as I thought.
