This washer is missing on the engine I'm working on and it seems to be fairly NLA. It's a simple enough part that I can fabricate, but I'm missing the dimensions.

My guess at the dimensions, from measuring the fan hub hole where the washer should be located:

• O.D. - 36 mm (1 13/32") 22 mm (7/8")
• I.D. - 8,4 mm (3 15/16")
• Thickness - 5 mm (3/16") 3 mm (1/8")

If someone could confirm these, that would be great.

Alternatively, simply visually confirming that the top of the washer is flush with the top of the fan hub would help me inferring the dimensions.

Thanks!

If someone else does not get it to you first I will have it to you shortly.

Its thickness is the most critical. Its a "spacer".

It is there to put the fan in the proper pulley alignment with the alternator. It goes there when you are not using the air conditioning pulley. Ray

I think he's referring to the washer under the center bolt that secures the hub to the crank, it's just a thick washer, I'll try and find one later today to measure.

Yeah, exactly that one Very Happy

I understand now that the dimensions are not critical, but if I fabricate it or find one, I might as well do it with the original measurements. If not possible, not a big deal though, I'll just go with my guessed dimensions.

Fortunately, I do have the other one, the spacer you're mentioning (#3 in the picture), which would have been a wee bit more difficult to make.

The one thing that should be done with that washer...is that since the bolt is the "safety" bolt for a machined taper joint....it should be thick, hard and as flat as possible on both sides so it makes support for locking very positive. Ray

there are millions out there. I just saw an ad the other day where a guy had buckets of the 3 hole ones - ask him if he also has the bolt and thick washer too. He might.

part #3 https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1512345

thick washer

One could braze two 3/8" Grade 8 USS washers together and have a pretty good substitute for the original. A metric equivalent would do as well.

I cannot answer that question. Maybe they're easier to find in the US, but here in Europe only VW Heritage (UK, out of stock) and a Dutch hotrod shop carry them. They might be available somewhere else too if one looks harder, but I don't think I'll be ordering a simple washer from another country. I'll go ahead and make my own.

It took an iteration of ordering the wrong washer blanks and then looking for pictures of the assembled washer on the gallery, but I think I now have the correct measurements. I thought I'd update and bring the thread to a close in case someone happens to need these dimensions too.

• O.D. - 36 mm (1 13/32")
• I.D. - 8,4 mm (3 15/16")
• Thickness - 5 mm (3/16")

Initially I had wrongly assumed that the washer fitted into the hole of the fan hub and was flush with the top plane of the hub. Instead, it goes on top of the hub, and its diameter is just slightly smaller than it.

Yes.....class 10.9 or grade 8 in SAE...minimum. This washer may not appear to do much....but it and the bolt going through it are the safety fastener for the tapered hub. Its ugly if one comes loose.
