And if you could buy any carb kit today what would it be for a 1600. |

If by "shorty" manifolds, you mean the idf and ida style carb manifolds, they are only about four inches tall. As far as what carb kit, I'd say the ict kit is about the least expensive, and easiest setup and tuning. Though I've become more partial to the Fi setup in recent years. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

Depends on which engine, and what size it is. For an 1800 or smaller, the 34 ICT is hard to beat, and the 32 PDSIT Solex (stock for 66 and 67 in the USA) are about equal. Above the 1800, you want dual throat dual carbs. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'd rather have dual throat even on a 1600. 36 dells on a type 3 is really nice with the jets on top. Dual DCNF is really compact choice that works great as well, you'll have to choke them down _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

You won't be the first, nor the last. On my old 71 Notch, I went with carbs for a while as I kept having FI issues with it. I did about a month of real world driving and constant testing before putting the carbs on (I had already lost 1/2 a summer to the FI). I tested all of the parts of the FI system (they were ALL good), and even replaced the FI wiring harness, but still had issues (it should have ran great, but didn't). Put the carbs on, and the car was good to go. Then later that year, I talked in person with Russ and Jim. Jim suggested I put the FI back on, and ran some more tests and found I had a slowly dieing Voltage Regulator. It would start out at 14.5V, and slowly drop to 13 volts after 5 miles, causing my running issues. Replaced the VR, and all was good. Never saw the problem with carbs, as the engine would run fine on 13 to 12 volts, but the FI ran crappy below 13.4 volts.
I talked to the guy who bought it about a year after I sold it, and found he put carbs back on it, so he could drive it trouble free as the FI started acting up again. I don't know what it was doing for him, but I think it was generator of VR related (or both) for him, as he replaced both before he went to carbs. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
