Hey how are you? I was thinking about buying a 912 basket engine for a Karmann Ghia project, and I really don't know any thing about them. What should I look for? Are the heads or cases prone to cracking in certain areas? Are there certain high dollar accessories, that I should be aware of? Last question, what is a fair price for a basket case 912 engine? Thanks!! - Wheelie Pete |

the 68 and 69 have the air ports in the heads, they tend to crack, so try to get an early one. everything is expensive, lol |

If its all there, fly wheel/clutch assy., generator, carbs and manifold, exhaust/heater boxes, and all the tin and if its not all apart in some boxes $500 - $800. Remember if all the parts look to be in good shape you could at minimum triple your money selling the parts if you can't put it together. I'm just waiting for better weather to put mine in a 70 Ghia. I did have it in a 78 SB Convert., but it was so scary fast the wife wouldn't drive it. |

you could purchase a cb performance vw engine for your car, have a lot more power than the old 912 engine, cheaper parts, and much much easier installation. I would purchase the 912 engine and then resell it to someone with a 912 who needs it and pocket the profit and use for the hot vw engine from cb |

What the VW guys don't understand about "the old 912" is it's a HEMI which will make more power from 3500 to 7000 stock than their big FLAT TOP piston, machined out case, stroker crank, big cam, big valves, and big exhaust (cheaper parts?) VW engine and get 28 - 30 mpg while they get 19 - 21 mpg and it will idle nice and smooth while their motor is struggling to keep running waiting for the light to change. You factor in all the expensive parts and machine work to build a hot VW engine compared to the race design and engineered parts in the STOCK Porsche to the econo-box cheap design parts and engineered for the VW any motorhead will go with the Porsche and enjoy the ride. |
