Hi Anglodeutsch4, definitely serpentine condensers were the next step before parallel flow. It is very true the rear engine layout, and especially the Type 4, makes it really hard to work out hardware that fits, and where to put it. In comparison it's just so easy with a front engined car, plus you get to protect everything and run short refrig lines.

I know one owner of an early 911 hit trouble when a rock punched a hole in the underbody mounted condenser. A/C manufacturers just don't expect you to put their stuff in such harms way Exclamation Very Happy How well the Corvair did with that extra heat dumped downwards I don't know, probably not well. However, back in the '60s even many domestics didn't have a/c. Rare was the person that optioned factory air on a Falcon, or Dart. You really had to go upscale to find a car with a/c in say 1968-70. Aftermarket was a cheaper and popular way to go, e.g. Comfy Kits.
