here's a pic of the ambulance conversion by Miesen with door open - the base for the stretcher swiveled to ease loading/unloading and there was half a rear seat for a nurse to hold your hand (assuming the patients feet were in the glove box)

Any guesses on what the antenna-looking piece on the bare chassis is? |
Because I had to do some cleaning up of the photo, I spent a lot of time looking at it, and also wondered about that. It appears to connect to the steering assembly, so my guess is that it's some sort of manual steering lock. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Warning - uninformed response. Is it for the choke?
Love the beetle ambulance photos - thanks.

The choke would be on the tunnel next to the shifter on this early model, close to where the rotary heater knob would have been on later models, so unlikely. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Note that it appears to run from up front then through the steering wheel, and all the way back to the Deluxe beyond. It then disappears under the front hood of the Deluxe. My guess it's simply a stout rope stretched between the two to keep unobservant visitors from walking/tripping/falling into the low slung bare chassis. Crowd control. |

Check that...It runs over the steering wheel though that doesn't change the crowd control idea. How come no one's commented the big box sitting under the steering column in front of the pedals? |

I thought that was so they could drive it around.
Kneel on the box and steer while someone pushes? _________________ How to Post Photos

An entertaining notion. Probably something a bit more mundane like adding additional support for the steering column in the absence of any bodywork to bolt it onto. |

You can see bracketry that supports the steering column. It could be as simple as just a box to sit on.

It seems I stirred a hornet's nest with my Hebmuller comments, and violated my own rule about posting without comment.
Here is the unfiltered image, which is inconclusive. I retract my comments about the hubcaps.

I will however go out on a limb and say the hubcap of this Kubelwagen has a bullet hole in it.
