this is in fact a numbers matching '51 engine and the fiber cam gear was replaced many years ago when the car was still in use in Finland.

My October '51 engine has the A and had the fiber cam gear when I got it.

I have "known" this for 20-30 years but can´t figure out from what i've learned it.
I have never thought of this before before i saw this thread..
Yesterday i went through everything i have but found no evidence for what i'm saying is right.
I read the VW Progressive Refinements yesterday that is here on thesamba to.

This is what i found abote the Bakelit fiber camgear in Typ 1.

March 21, 1951 ch no 1-0241734 engine number 1-0287661 came a new camgear in a fiber material "RESITEX" Bakelit but only on export cars to make the engines quieter.

In December 1 1955 the new cam gear in aluminum was tested in some cars. From ch no 1-1033950 engine number 1-231475 to 1-245817.

In February 24, 1956 from ch no 1-114318 engine number 1-336623 to 1-443574, another 20000 aluminum camgears were fitted.

In August 21 1956 ch no. 1-266678 (1) engine 1-518878 now all the De luxe sedan gets camgears in aluminum.

Could it be that in all new engine with fiber camgears have the A stamp so they would known in what engine they where installed in but why did they wanted to know that?

What speaks against my knowledge is, then we should have sees many overcrossed A or abraded A when the fiber was exchanged and that have i never seen.

So I can have completely wrong.

Awesome.

It appears as though they used either one from early on.

I have a set of original VW drawings from 1949, at the page showing the engine there is a comment: A "eingschlagen", "Nur bei Motoren nach A-.10.00 o.Z." In the labelling field, there is an additional comment: 19.4.51 "A-Kennzeichnung u. Bemerkung neu (weitere Änd siehe Blatt 1 u 2)"

roughly translated:

A "stamped", "only on engines after A-.10.00 o.Z." comment in labelling field: 19.4.51 "A-marking and comment new (additional changes see page 1 and 2)"

Very interesting topic. I've often seen the 'A' on cases and not known the meaning.

So I present the 'Da Vinci code' of case stamping if anyone wants to have a guess.

I've just assumed it's been rebuilt a lot.

These smaller stampings are probably the only ones likely to be a vw/ factory thing.

No idea. Don't even know who that is sorry. At least not by name. Engine came out of a property in the Dandenong ranges. It's been rebuilt post dropping a valve, and not been run since

Mine is from April '57, apparently original (number shown in all the documentation I have) and has a "W" stamped....

I've got both an "A" stamp (for the removed back in 1999) Bakelite cam gear, and also a "W" stamp, as well as a few other tiny stamps... Didi I miss it? What is the "W" for?
