Hi guys,
I have prepared myself for the backlash I know I will inevitably recieve. However, I would love to clear coat my '72 bug, to make it shiny over the patina (A look that isnt for everyone, but I think it looks pretty cool).
I have no idea where to start, any tips/information?

Scuff, spray, hope.
Clearly your surface is what you want it to be. So you have to give the clear a mechanical bond to the existing finish. I would make sure the surface is dust/contaminate free. Then give it a good scuffing with a scotchbrite. Then clean it again thoroughly with a degreaser and apply your clear.
Now how the clear interacts the existing finish is unknown. Maybe it lifts it all. Maybe its fine. Maybe try a test panel first before you lose your beloved finish? |

After scuffing and cleaning to the best of your ability... I would use a matte clear. I think a glossy clear would dramatically change the look. The 1st coat I would put on the lightest of coats almost like overspray. Too much clear on the 1st coat and the solvents will surely lift edges and cause problems. I would do that at least a couple times before trying to put on a couple real coats.
It will be a crapshoot for sure. _________________ 71 vert build. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=572951&highlight=dead |

It looks like it was stolen out of a Autobody Shop IMHO since you expected me to comment. Use acrylic lacquer BC/CC for good results!
