When I bought a 73 thing a few years ago it had the original top n frame. It was battered n tattered. It was in San Diego n it needed to be brought to Vermont. Well I drove to Phx n Larry at the Thing Shop. He hooked me up took my old frame in trade n sold me a new top
That was in 2004. The top is still serviceable n still driving around the country. 28 states so far. It was $1,000 n well spent.U need front clips, top straps, tie down clips

I'd like to inrease the servicibility of the Thing by getting a top sometime hopefully soon.

Mine came with the original frame, but little left of the top material/fabric itself. The frame appears to be slightly bent in a couple places.

So I'm weighing whether trying to fix up my frame and buy a top, or just buy a top on frame setup from the Thing Shop.

Thoughts?

Hermann had a top when I bought him, but the frame was distorted and one day coming home from town, it came unlatched and I just barely kept it from coming open. I traded K-mann for a reconditioned frame. Bottom line, it's straight, but still not any stronger than the old one, so I'm planning on reinforcing it with angles and square tube like a couple fellows have shown here before.

Here's one: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=480488

When I get the frame fixed up, I have the Thing Shop kit to reattach the top fabric.

So far, I've only got drowned like a rat once for lack of a top, and I have a British Desert boonie hat with a neck scarf to keep the sun off Laughing
