Cool, it's finally coming together. All of those test fits are working out now. Good job. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Got a half a day in yesterday..
Took a few misc. parts in for vapor blast.
Check out this lightened flywheel I saw there!
The final test-fits to get the bus snubber mount into place.
It has to be really far 'back' and 'down' to work correctly.
Basically 'sinking' it into the arm's bearing housing area.
All of this is just tacked in place.
Darren the Master Welder is going to lay a row of nickels all over and around these things.
The snubber mount will also serve as a gusset.
See also the sinking of the mount, requiring a bunch of weld in the near future here.
Also made a couple of gussets for the bottom, with ultra-performance speed holes.
All of this is just tacked to verify fit.
It will have to come off to do the pin in the middle that actually holds the snubber.
(Going to make that from scratch on a lathe).
The other isde of it will pick up the parting seam.
It will also weld to the top of the mount at it's new location,
And the funny area at the top will be cut away.
Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to cold bend it.
Darren has torches, and what it takes to get this right, no doubt.
Coming up with a good compromise,
A position that is centered where it should be to hit the contact points on the sub-frame,
(Meaning far back enough towards the bearing housing)
Also 'low' enough that it won't just be hitting all of the time,
but still not compromising the structural integrity of the part.
And adding some strength as a gusset, as well.
Clear as mud, right?
We're also going to be laying a pretty row of nickels finishing off places that can use it.
Got to get these snubbers working, and well,
Plus strengthen these chopped arms up,
For the intended use of this car!

So, a question for the experts here..
What color e-brake handle grip is correct for my '67?
Here's an old pic of a few handles,
If I'm ciphering this right,
It looks like a dark grey handle is correct?
Dark grey handle with a black button?
Dark grey handle with white button was earlier,
Black handle with black button was right for later..
Let me know if i have this right, please o wise masters of the type of three...
Thought it was a black handle, but broke getting it off, cause someone glued it on once..
Been dealing with the ultimate minutiae; sanding the heater control lever balls up through the grits.
Got the dings and scratches out, time for some buffing.
A life? Umm.. I think those are on aisle three, bout halfway down..
Powder-coated crack-welded/smoothed long handle,
Replete with cad-plated bits..
Unbelievable how many fasteners have come up missing during the assembly process.. Still need the other bracket, and both locknuts..
Good thing i have a couple more cars' worth of fasteners.
The box of stuff going to the next round of cad is huge already!
And, finally an 'after' shot of the latest vapor blast session.
After waiting months to get other stuff done (or not),
It feels odd to just have stuff back the next day!
Anyhow.. The painstaking process of assembly, the sussing out of what goes where,
and what is missing.
The result of a car being completely apart for a few years..
Thanks for all of the help, guys.
Takes a village... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Had me a great day today..
First, a trip back over the hill to the chromer's paid off.
Also went to Darren's and turned up some snubber mounts from a couple of old bolts.
They look too big in this pic, but they are actually a bit small..
Darren has the trailing arms now, and everything he needs to finish them off.
He also welded up the holes that 'somebody' drilled wrong.
Got the die-grinder out to smooth out the repair..
Finished up the day starting to build a bunch of these sheet-metal "heat enhancers".
Was going to build a whole slew of these, to fill the heater boxes..
Think they will make the heater more efficient?
Or will they just insulate the heat from the airflow to the cabin??

A buddy at work built a heat exchanger for his aircraft engine a couple years ago. It looks like a VW one but no fins, he used the copper kitchen scrubbers, just slipped them over the exhaust pipe and built a box around it. It heats the cabin very well for winter flying. I’m going to try it on my heat exchanger project if we ever get spring this year. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Exactly. You're not alone either, as I know a bunch of people around here and on the east coast who feel the same way. At least we've gone 7 days straight with no snow, so that's a plus. Now if we could get above 50 I'd feel better.
Sorry Steve for getting "off topic" in your thread. But that's some nice work going on. You're still making progress. How did the screw end of that SB 12 come out (the 1 you fixed)? Or is it still at the chromers? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Those same parts..!
Who would have guessed that someone actually sells snubber mounts now..
Mine might be a bit odd looking, The tool insert was dull, but they will hold the snubber on, I'm 100% sure.
They are being welded on right now hopefully.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

The snowboarding here in the Sierras has been GREAT!!
Our local spot got over 11 feet this month!
They're calling it the "March Miracle"! Couldn't be happier about it!
If you look at this pic, you can see that they went extra-extra thin near the Logos;
Makes kind of a slightly lumpy texture through there, where the chrome didn't hide the texture.
Bob was right about the sanding scratches showing through the chrome.
Fortunately, you would have to be on your knees, and have your face up underneath the headlight ring, really close to it, to see this.
Anybody who climbs up under there to see those scratches will be really easy to kick from behind!! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thanks for your reply.
Been searching ads and gallery images, and can't seem to find a pic of a '67 e-brake handle..
I think I'll do grey handle, black button..
Will just try to find a way to make joy in my life, if that should happen to be all wrong.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Well, a couple of half-days in over the weekend (or less).
Friday was a holiday, so finished up welding the surface-area enhancers onto the sub pipes.
A couple of rows of fins that have a lot of surface area..
the more burrs and rough scraggly areas, the better, right?
I'm going to sandblast the carbon off of everything, so they don't stink.
Also had some smoke-age and soot fall out of the pipes.
And I remembered my hero machinist, Jim at NAPA always 'de-coked' a.k.a. 'de-carbonized' used cylinder heads, namely the exhaust ports, using his acetylene torch.
I'm going to have him go up in there and get that soot out of there.
It's dang thick!
These head pipes are a real bottleneck to performance,
So i need them as big as possible on the ID.
Think I'll even buy a long-shaft flex-hone in the coarsest grit i can find to run up in there, too, after Jim is done.
Started off finishing the hole repair from by wrong-drilled mount part.
Sanded back flat the repair area on the old belt-sander,
Got it all bolted into place, and a hole marked in the right spot this time..
Got all of my throwout and clutch cable whatnot,
Plus parts diagrams and spares etc. - this came apart like 8 years ago or more.
(Check out my desktop wallpaper; a decent size day out at Rockview )
Took forever and then some to get this stuff all sussed out.
The parts don't really match the pics in the P-car manual.
It went apart and together a half-dozen times or more before I was confident it's right.
Then the fun started waning..
Good thing I have these huge hatches, it took forever to chase all of the powder coat out of these cluster mount holes.
Felt like that tap and tiny wrench were going to strip/break.
Sure enough, Nate was right again,
The cable tube needs shortened,
or it will foul the cable..
Here's where the fun really stopped.
How in the hell all of these measurements and mock-ups still end up in a fuck-up is beyond me.
Not the end of the world, but i was all excited to stab the motor and start pushing a clutch pedal.
Tried to do something that i can succeed at, while stewing upon my clutch cable conundrum..
Started doing everything to mount the battery;
Like cleaning off more powder coat,
and chasing thr...er... Shit.
Just kept beating my head against it, chased to properly,
And eventually got the battery cables in!! WhooHoo!!
Even got the bolt length for the negative cable just right...
Gots to find the joy where you can..
Anyhow,
NOT how i wanted this to all turn out..
But,
Such is how these things are sometimes (all the time )
Will continue to beat my head against it some more;
Clearance a cable tube, and send the cable out for a re-shortening.
Plenty of other stuff to do... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Went to see Larry the Painter.
Here he is frontin' Hard!
Show us yo gangsta-gangsta Dog!
Ha Ha!
Larry is a really nice guy, and kind of a local hero.
He has been steadily plowing away at the warbly crooked mess...
Also, check this out!
A package shows up from Ontario?
Huh?
Dig this, though, and the blueprint of a squareback!
How cool is this?
Big Thanks to 'eyetzr'!
Also seen in the above pic is another source, of, er, distraction..
A free boat.. A real bargain, right?
I think i paid too much. _________________ Bus Motor Build
