Made a little more progress with help from some of my fellow club members. Cut and buffed the old paint. She shined up nicely. enjoy the photos..
and after 11 hrs its almost done
and a couple of high speed video's

Did you guys start with 1000 or 2000 grit? Or use compounds only?

started with 1000 dry and then moved to 1500 wet , 3000 wet, 5000 wet
wool pad with 3M Cutting
foam pad with 3m Polish

Well it is always the little things, I am not sure what is going on here, no visible cracks in the plug wires, no nicks, but it darn sure is jumping from the plug wires to the braided oil filter line.

Disconnect a plug wire one at a time at the head, let it limp on 3 cylinders and see if you can narrow it down to one bad wire, then replace it.

Well I took the old girl on a ten hour trip this past weekend. Drove it from Houston to Fredericksburg TX for the Texas VW classic. I ran her 640 miles the entire weekend. I did get a new set of plug wires installed before the trip, adjusted the valves and put a final tune and sync on the carbs. She hummed the whole way only stopping for fuel. I averaged 28.6 miles per gallon. She is a little slow climbing hills but she ran a steady 55-60 mph (GPS verified).
I only had two small issues the ISP reproduction pulley is leaking. I did run into a thread shortly after I bought the pulley https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=100
I wish I had read that before I spent 100 bucks on the pulley. I plan on switching it out with a stock pulley to see if that stops the leak. The other issue I have is that it is harder to start after you have been on the road for some time. It does start every time but it takes way longer than normal. I found if I start it with the throttle pushed to the floor it starts faster then if you just pump it once and push the button. I plan on tackling that issue in the next week or so.
One thing I did notice and I am not sure if this is an issue because I have never had a stock height car. It seems that the car is a little stiff and bouncy up front. I installed new kings, links and shocks so I am not sure if it is stiff just because everything is new or if there is an issue that I need to address. Before I left I aired the fronts up to 17 lbs and the rears to 25 lbs. on the highway it seemed fine but at lower speeds on normal roads and you feel everything. (that was the only complaint the wife had on the entire trip, she said the girls were sore from all the bouncing...lol if you get the point)

I would state this to be normal, one time pump before getting started is the rule for a cold start of a 40hp engine with automatic choke system. For an already warmed up split the rule is to push the pedal slowly towards its end during cranking. There will be the point, where the engine will find enough fuel to start. For a very hot engine after only a short stop pushing directly the pedal to the end of its way during cranking is also my experience.

Welcome driving a stock spilt! The stiffy front axle is one of the caracterisitc points of the spilt eara! You might think there is no front suspension, but of course it is. They wanted the front axle to improve the car to corner well. A normal front suspension was spend up from the oval eara by expanding also the spring travel.
