Embed link in text?

The answer might be so blindingly obvious that I'm missing it, but I wonder if someone can explain how to me how to embed a link in text on the site. I have both text and links in my signature line, but it'd be much tidier if the links were embedded in the text. I notice many people have embedded links in their signature lines but there's no obvious way of doing this when editing your profile or even when posting a reply.

I tried using <a href=" "> but since HTML is off in my "options" this doesn't work.

Any tips?
