|

I have a Westy that a PO put in what I believe to be a 901 5 speed transmission. I can get numbers, but don't have them accessible at the moment. I can put the transmission in Reverse and 2-5 and they all work fine. 1st I get nothing. If I have the engine running, I get a little grinding when letting out the clutch, but if I put it in 1st with the engine off. Start, let out the clutch, I get nada. No movement, no grinding, just sits there. I'm going to pull the transmission back out this week. Have read some articles on 1st gear replacement, am fairly mechanical, but have not messed with Transmissions. I'll pull the nosecone off and take some pictures.
Any initial thoughts?
Anyone in the Houston area with experience/willing to assist? |

1st gear is down and back. You may have to adjust your shifter. |

I disconnected the shifter and was manually putting it in and out of gear at the nosecone. This way I could eliminate shifter and linkage altogether as the issue. Put it in reverse (actually drove it) and then just went 180 to put it in 1st. Reverse worked, 1st did not. |

Just so you know 1st is at the end of the shaft (next to diff.). |

that is a strange one, if first is bad, it will usually pop out when trying to put it in or grind horribly. The fact that it goes into reverse eliminates a disengagement problem, maybe something is loose may want to check the torque on the expansion bolt. |

Drain the trans and look for chunks of brass as sincro ring may have gone away. |

No brass in this trans, but you might find the tiny engagement teeth have sheared off 1st gear idler. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary
