Although I've never done that job myself, instructions for removing the fresh air inlet trim can be found on page A-67 of the 1960 VW Karmann Ghia Shop Manual - Body Section (which can be found here in The Samba Technical Archives under the Karmann Ghia Owner's Manual section).

They have been in that spot for 50 years, it likes it. Once the 2 screws are out slowly work around the perimeter loosening it. The rubber could have been glued into place, previous fender bender could kink it into place, evil previous owners...
Try a pick with a 90* bend at the end. Hook from behind and pull...slowly around the perimeter. It should come out...or you will see why. Keep a watchful eye while operating on the patient.

You can purchase a set of plastic body trim tools almost anywhere.

The kits vary in offerings on sizes and shapes.

The larger kits will probably offer the fine tool you need.

Using these tools greatly lessens the chances of doing harm to your paint.

Ues, remove from the front.
There are no other fasteners.

You will find that a large part of the grill is "dummy" and air only passes through the part closest to the center of the unit.

You may also find a clogged mess of sticks, leaves and dead bugs in one or both screens.

There is a small tab on the side opposite the screw also. Be careful not to bend or break when you pull it forward. If you start pulling it forward on the screw side you should be safe (speaking from experience on a 71)

IDK if it works on Ghia grilles but to remove the plastic vents in the dash of a mkI/II, I would bend two tight 90* in the end of a coat hanger with a pair of needle nose & insert it into the vent , turn it 90* & hook the back of one of the slats & pull them out that way.
