Hello on the late model type 3 square I see the offset is ET46. So what other offset could be used and not upset the design functioning and handling to awful much.

That's the million dollar question. It depends on wheel width, tire width and offset or backspacing. I mean, you could probably fit an 8" wheel in there with the right tire and offset. What' are you trying to accomplish?

Want to make sure that I have the proper wheel offset for the vehicle that the engineers designed it for.

Stick with the factory offset if it makes you feel better, but you're talking about a poorly designed vehicle in the first place. There are a whole lot of ways to make a 50 year old car work better than it did on the showroom floor. I'd say do whatever makes you happy.

Hey gt1953, I checked out photos of your '72 Square.

Yes, 46et is correct for OG stock 4 1/2J" x 15" stock steel wheel. With Vw Type 3 wheel offset and tire size are very important due to stock clearance issues. You are very limited on 4-lug wheel selections after market or stock as, most are 4 1/2 " width wheel and run 165/15 or smaller tires.
If your looking to keep your car stock ride height, then you could buy the repop stock steel wheels, Size 5 1/2J" x 15" from an array of vendors that fit the Type 3 offset . This will allow you to have more tire size choices.
I'm rolling with this set-up and have 195/65/15 Front and 205/65/15 Rear.
Shocks are the most important key to the ride and handling.

Thanks for the info Type3nut. I do appreciate it. Been a type 1 guy and type three is a new learning curve.
Do the scoops really help engine temp.
While at it send me a set of dual carbs, intakes and linkage.
