Explain how you are setting the timing, what distributor model you have and how you are determining #1 TDC to start with.

If it is running at all then a couple of the plug wires have to be in the correct place, but two might be swapped. More info would help, is the engine back firing? When did the problem start? Is your compression good? Is the idle slow and weak?

Don't post the same question in different threads. Crying or Very sad

Thanks for the replies. TDC is with the flywheel mark aligned with the case split
and #1 valves closed while rocking the flywheel.
The engine is missing and will only start with timing retarded.
Engine is weak and tends to backfire.
I've been through the carb which is clean.
I think a cylinder is not firing due to the misaligned rotor and notch.

Some after market distributors have the rotor off by 90 degrees (points toward #1 instead of the pulley). What distributor do you have?
Run through the basics before assuming the distributor. Valve adjustment, and check for intake/exhaust leaks. Check your plug wires, 1,4,3,2

Check and double check your firing order one more time. If you have a couple of wires swapped your engine will fight to run and backfire when it does.

checked the firing order twice. adjusted the valves and still have the same issues. ill check for intake and exhaust leaks. The carb is a new chinese PICT 1 which may be the issue. it's clean as a whistle but cheaply made.
ill change the plugs too since i'm not sure how old they are.

Is this a "new" Chinese distributor as well?

You don't say where you live but getting someone familiar with one of these engines to take a look at yours might save you a lot of grief. There is likely a VW club somewhere not to far from you.

I'm in Pensacola FL. Rare Air is the local VW club here.
