Semper fi from a tin can sailor.
Your point is taken; the diameters of a 14" tire can be different than a 15". I would think the speedo will read faster than actual road speed and maybe a good thing. Any other possible differences like mounting? Broke speedo is still in the Thing. _________________ The police never think it's as funny as I do... |

hey Panheadguy,
do you know what specifically is wrong with it?
I had a beetle one in my THING and swapped it out for a spare I got but it had a cracked plastic gear, I contacted http://www.odometergears.com/products/Volkswagen/Mechanical+Speedometer/19 and they got me the parts I needed.
I made the "new" one match my other one's mileage
and
even buffed out the plastic lens cover with some Mothers plastic polish I had from a headlight lens restore kit and made it look like new.
I cant find the post's on it (been a few years back) but if you search in the 68' and up beetle forms for speedo fix or odometer gear you should find a few posts discussing the subject of repair and photos too.
Hope it helps, try it you may can fix it.
[prying it apart was fun but do-able]

I haven't taken it out or apart yet. The fuel gauge needle is missing. I just bought this to tow behind my motorhome. This to replace my 68 type 1 once I trust it. Bought off a guy in IL that was no mechanic. _________________ The police never think it's as funny as I do... |

hey Panheadguy,
Gotcha there, well I understand that, well if you do get a chance and wanted to muck with it...
I think this was the link that I used to give mine a overhaul and fix the cracked gear and reset it to match the one I removed.

Hope it helps!

Thanks double C. Probably will come to that. I might have a speedo or three around here someplace. _________________ The police never think it's as funny as I do... |
