what was the original carburetor and distributor that came on a 73 thing?

solex 34pict-3, base flange # 377_1 or 377_2
bosch dvda 205AN

was that the setup, just like other type 1's of 73?
i'm trying to find the original parts for my thing.

i have a rebuilt bosch dvda 205AN and currently a 72 manual carb, 325_2. both the 325_2 and the 377_* above use the 205AN so i was thinking this would work for now.

can someone help me out with info? i haven't yet found any chart stating something different for the vw thing.

California bound type 181's had distributor 043 905 205 C installed in 1973-74. The other 49 states had 113 905 205 AN same as the Beetle. My data shows more than a half dozen different carburetor flange numbers in use in 1973 and doesn't call out the type 181 specifically.

hey tasb, yeah i tried using the 205AN that i bought from you and it performed well as far as i could tell. but that carb has not been easy on me. like i stated to you in our emails, it's the 325_2 that should be compatible.

if the 181 used the same equipment as the beetles of the same year, then i'll continue searching for a 377_1 or _2 in the meantime.

i'm going to keep cleaning the heck out of the carb a couple more times in hopes that there's something lodged in the pathways. there are no stripped threads or anything that i can detect. i'm not sure when to call it quits on a carb as being too worn out to deal with.

I believe your base flange number should be 404-1 for a '73 Thing. I have 2 '74 Things and they have a base number of 436-1. You should also have a metal tag that has the number 181 129 027L (non- CA).

Hey Al, thanks for that info. I hadn't found that yet. Where did you get that from? I've seen a bunch of charts but haven't seen one for my thing.

I think I got it from one of the guys on this forum. I also saw it on one of the list. I may have seen the list come up on the bay window bus forum. I know for sure the late CA. '74 thing is a 436-1 base number. Are you sure your distributor is the right one?

VW 410-1 34PICT-3 113905205AN

Here's the info I have on The thing. ^^

VW 377-2 34PICT-3 113905205AN BUG 1600 1973 127.5 75z 55 USA Manual

My understanding is the 205AN was a bug and Ghia distributor in 1972 and 1973. I can't recall seeing the 205AN in a Thing.

At the end of the day, a German Solex 34-3 with a DVDA manual transmission base flange number will work fine with any DVDA distributor.

The list above shows SVDA German Solex 34-3's that were matched to the famous German Bosch 034 carb or it's full Bosch number of 043905205 distributor.

The big difference between the SVDA and DVDA Solex carb is the hole in the throttle plate. It's bigger in the DVDA carb to allow an idle at the 5*ATDC timing.

To the OP, what are your issues with your combo or what's not working correctly?

Below is Andy's excellent list of base flange numbers.

Early US market Things (engine AM 0 000 001 - AM 0 008 515) used carburetor 181.129.027K, which had flange number VW 404-1. It was paired with distributor 113.905.205AN. The early Things also had their own manifold part number 181.129.701, which featured the EGR valve being attached directly to the flange (similar to 1972 California autostick Beetles and Ghias).

Later "49 State" Things used carburetor 181.129.027L (engine AM 0 008 516 and later), which had flange number VW 435-1. The difference between this carburetor and the earlier one is the addition of a spring on the throttle shaft. The spring closes the throttle if the main spring should fail (I believe this fail-safe was a legal requirement). I am not certain when exactly the 043.905.205C distributor replaced 113.905.205AN (as in I don't know if the change happened midway in the 1973 year or at the start of the 1974). The primary difference between the two is the condenser opening: circle for the 113 and square for the 043. The manifold also changed to 113.129.701CA, which had a bolt on EGR valve.

74 California model Things had carburetor 181.129.027M (introduced on engine AM 0 016 001). I don't know for certain what the flange number is. I have been trying to ask folks about the flange number for that carburetor for a number of years, but I haven't had any success. By this point 043.905.205C was the distributor being used (and listed as the replacement for 113.905.205AN). The EGR valve itself changed for the California market, but I believe the rest of the manifold is the same.

All three of the carburetors are listed as having the same jetting. x127.5 main jet, 75z air correction jet, and 55 idle/pilot jet. I didn't notice any difference between the off-idle transition ports of the K or L carburetors. They also have the larger air bypass hole in the throttle plate that is typical of carburetors intended for DVDA distributors.

The two distributors are listed as having the same advance curves (and vacuum curves). The vacuum canister is the same between the two.

Al Capulco, do your 436-1 carburetors have part number tags on them? I have a couple 435-1's in my stash complete with L part number tags. Just curious if there is a discrepancy (or if you might actually have the M flange number). I have one 436-1 in my stash, but it is missing the part number tag so I wasn't sure what it went to exactly.

Pictures!

The carburetor up top is 181.129.027K and the one below is 181.129.027L. If you look closely, you can see the additional spring on the L carburetor. Note both carburetors are missing their dashpots.

The manifold up top is 181.129.701 and the one below is 113.129.701CA. The lower manifold is missing the EGR valve (attached via the two bolt holes) and the EGR port itself has been brazed shut.

The part number tag on my vw 436-1 is 181129027 M. The carburetor is on a '74 CA. Acapulco model with a engine number AM 027711. The think the build date to be about July.
