I have a 1964 Beetle brochure that addresses the storage capacity of the car.
"Then, we add a 4.95 cubic foot carpeted compartment behind the rear seat. With enough room for two average sized suitcases. (Some people even put the baby there)"
I am not making this up. |

So many people who grew up in the air-cooled VW era have told me that they used to ride back there. My dad would sit back there in his aunt's '64 Beetle. You have to remember this was in an era where the safety features listed hydraulic brakes and turn signals. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

the trunk is there for a reason, not just a place to mount the front bumper(witch I don't have on my car) so I use it as it is ment to be used. grocery's & such. dolor store stuff go's on the pass side floor most of the time as there is only a bag or 2 of it....and the snacks may need to be close....or not I have no spair tire so theres extra room....lotsa extra room perhaps I should of kept the Lincoln nose kit...
on another note...there is a big black guy in town with a lincolin nose on his bug,he recently had the car painted and is doing /having lots of stuff done to the car, possiably the prettyest one of those Ive ever seen. |

How well I know. When our oldest child was a baby (1970), he rode in a basket on the passenger floor of our Corvette between his mama's feet. |

I rode back there in my single digits in the 70's. No big deal. And my dad was a Minnesota State Highway Patrol officer then.
My folks drove from Alaska to MN in the fall of 1963 in a Ford station wagon with my then six week old sister riding on my mother's lap the whole way. No big deal.
On topic, back when I still drove a bug, I mostly used the front trunk for spare parts and tools, what little of them I had back then. Only time the trunk was used for more than that was on long road trips. Tent and sleeping bag fit quite well up there. _________________ nothing |

I hear you.
Contents include a wheel chock in the box in the upper left corner, and a 32" cheater pipe between the scissor jack and the spare tire. The cheater pipe is for surrounding a flex handle breaker bar for removing the rear axle nut. The 36 mm socket is somewhere in that 12" X 16" cardboard box.
As you Notch and Fastback owners know, you can't put much stuff in the rear trunk because you have to roll the mat forward to allow the engine cover to be raised and latched when inspecting the engine.

Our bug is our only car.
It sits in the driveway all winter so by the time spring comes along there is alot that needs to get done and that car gets used! Groceries go in the front, back seat, footwells and compartment behind the seat. I've had lots of people come up to me asking why I was putting my groceries on my motor lol. In gardening season I fill the car front and back with plants--I should have taken a pic of the car full of rose bushes and annuals for my friend and I last year. You should see the guy at the Canadian Tire last year when I started to load 12 bags of compost into the back seat. I baby that car but sometimes it gets used like a truck. |

^^^ You should see the looks I get at Home Depot loading plywood and long pieces of molding in my bug sticking up through the sliding Sunroof. It's amazing how much stuff you can get into such a small car. Add a roof rack and it's phenomenal. I put 9 bags of pine bark mulch on my roof rack and bungeed it down. Looked crazy. But worked!! |

I have found that the only thing that's fun about getting sent to the wholesale club is... taking the bug! They don't have bags so you can creatively stack household supplies and food stuffs to fit a whole lotta things in the front of a Super Duper. Bricks of t.p. and paper towels go in the back seat.
A post isn't a post without a picture. This is the before shot but the kiddos had it unloaded too quick on the back end and I missed getting one of the puzzle of detergent and ziplock bags. There's always next week! _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Back in the '80's we had a string of '71/'72 Super Beaters, I do recall putting a full sized Keg in the trunk...
In the late '60s my folks had a '66 Bug, we would drive from Ct. to N.J. in it, 3 boys in the back and Mom holding our Baby sister on her lap, Mom hated crossing the Tapanzee Bridge in the Bug, and my Brothers would fight over who got to sit in the "way back".... luggage area. If we did the drive at night, we would lay the back seat down for the 3 of use to sleep on the ride, I think they prefered the night time drive as it was a lot quieter.... _________________ Tom

I usually put bags of charcoal in the trunk of my 67. Groceries go on the back seat.
On long trips I put my luggage, laptop and any other thing that might catch the eye of a thief in the trunk. Out of sight, out of mind!
I also carry the usual spares mostly packed in the spare tire. Oil, fan belt, throttle and clutch cable..... _________________ I have learned over the years.

I daily drive my '60 for a long time and can't tell you the last time I used the trunk for anything other than the tool roll/spare tire/other misc spare parts (probably 10 years ago when I took it camping overnight and stored blankets in there?). NEVER used it for groceries!
I tend to use the well behind the back seat, the passenger seat, the floor, the back seat generally contains the dog... basically I'll use anywhere else in the car for storage BUT the trunk!
It used to smell a bit petrol fume-y in there so is probably why I got out of habit of using it and after having a square where you just didn't need the trunk I just never got back into the habit of using it! Also having the hump style fuel tank does limit the space there too. _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

Same trunk usage for me, except that if I stop at a store and then have to run a 2nd or 3rd errand, I lock the stuff from the store in the trunk. I have a convertible, and even with top up the last thing I want is for someone to slit the top to grab a $5 oil filter I'd just picked up. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I forgot to mention--how awesome it is to pull into space at the curb in front of a store then just lift the hood to load the front of the car right from the sidewalk!
Also--when going for lumber for small jobs we've very often cut our boards to fit the back seat or between the seats --we did the same for sheet metal for one of my son's welding jogs. We always keep a good thick piece of tarp in the back for protecting the interior. I should look into a good roof rack! |
