I have a '79 convertible and while driving yesterday it did something for the first time. There was a fairly loud noise sounding like a fan or loud venting noise in the dash area. Turned on dash fan to eliminate any issues with that and the fan was working properly. Several on and off ignition cycles and no changes. Lifted the hood and could hear the sound there, a bit quieter then inside the car but very noticeable still. Ok I am stumped....does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thank you.

Are you sure it sound like a fan? It's possible it's the fuel pump going bad, that's usually a loud hum. Does it matter what speed you go? It's possible it's a relay, but they don't sound like a fan.

You may be right on the fuel pump. I just drove it again...it sputtered a bit under load but the loud humming/buzzing seems to be from the underside of the front of the car.

That is where your fuel pump is located.

yup, check fuel pump.

that is the only thing that would make that noise you are hearing besides the fan which you already stated is working just fine. only other thing would be possibly be the wiper motor.

Thanks all. I had tried the wipers and they work fine without any additional noises. At first I didnt even think it was the fuel pump as a new Bosch was installed last September.
