good afternoon everyone i need your help, is there anyone in Salem Oregon that know their way around a diesel VW, my father gave me his old caddy and it ran like a champ but a few moths back is stooped running, it will crank over but wont start, he checked the glow plugs and are good, replaced timing belt, checked to see if there was diesel going to thew injector pump and its good, even tried a little bit of starting fluid, it sputtered a bit but did not run, he does not know much about diesels and i am in texas, i have 2 options, fly to oregon and try to fix it myself then fly back another time and pick it up if i get it running, or drive with a trailer to oregon then back to texas, so i rather have someone take a look at it and pay them for their time.

any confirmed recommendations on a local shop in Salem or if you know your way around diesel VW's and think you can get it running please let me know.

my Dad babies his Vw's so i am sure its something simple just need someone with mad skills to work some magic.

fuel stop solenoid getting 12 volts? should click (magnetic plunger) when it gets power. If not just jump it directly with a wire from the battery +

vwdiesel.net and vwdieselparts.com have the people that know. You want the general IDI forums - search, people have talked about this already

Ask him if he's smells/smelled fuel or if the pump is wet or if there is/has been any fuel leaks as this would be a sign that the seals are leaking & the pump might have lost it's prime.

Depending on the temperatures, if it has one or more bad glow plugs or the fuse on the firewall has failed, the engine won't start.

Have him loosen the 17mm nut at the top of each injector, crank the engine over to see if fuel squirts out, if not, crank it until it does. This will help determine if the pump is doing it's job & will also help bleed the lines if there's air in the system.
