Hopefully a simple question, I'm after a front badge for a 59 split..
Did the badge change at any point during the years, or does one badge fit all.. Also how do you tell if it's an original and not a repro ?
Thanks,

The front VW emblem was the same from 56-67. It was different for Barndoor 55 and earlier buses as they had 3 mounting posts on the rear. The one you want has 4 mounting posts on the rear. You can generally tell the reproductions from the originals here in the US because the reproductions have threaded posts on the rear and use a nut the originals had no threads and just used a push on clip to hold it in place. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

You can access the VW dealer parts manual for type 2 here:
http://www.oacdp.org/
Lots of really neat exploded diagrams, with proper name of each part, how many used, what model/s used on, from which chassi to which chassi used and with the part number there you can do WWW search for hard to find parts.
Enjoy! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Are you saying even 1955 Barndoor Buses take the later emblem? _________________ How to Post Photos

I thought early buses (not Barndoor) had a separation between the V and the W on the emblem? I will look for the pics. _________________ American Red Cross Safe And Well:

You my be thinking of the super early Barndoor emblems that are made of Aluminum - they have a complete separation
Later Buses have a "fake" separation in that the center connector is painted:
Most of the paint there on original emblems has worn off over the years _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks Everett that clarifies it. Is the early aluminum barn door solid casting or pressed?

No, I said that buses 3/55 on, which is post barndoor buses, take the later emblem.
The last ten months of 1955 production use the later emblem. That is most buses buildt in 1955.
Only the first two months of 1955 were barndoor buses.

That made it sounds like the emblem change was at the beginning of 1956, which is not correct. I fixed it to say.

FWIW, in 1960 VW retrospectively declared the 1955 model year change to start at 3/55 VIN 20- 117 902.
This was probably to make it easy at the parts department. It clears up issues when ordering parts for your January or February 1955 bus, just call it a 54.
If they sell you later shocks, that's a pain, they just aren't a simple bolt on. Ask for 1954 shocks. Or brake parts, or emblem, etc.
If you accept that there are no 55 barndoors, it makes the later emblem 55-67.
Since that can be confusing, I find it is useful to use the month as well as year of changes, especially for pre- 1965. |

this is a repop front emblem and it had push on clips to hold it in place and not screw-on... and besides, who would ever know how it is fastened... how would anyone ever know this iS a repop part? They look exactly the same as original and in this case, maybe better... this Westy will not be painted... body is finished.

That's my bus! Took that pic right after I got the emblem. I've also paint matched the front since then...
I know, useless post, but the pic made me smile... _________________ -Adam

Regarding reproduction versus original for a ‘55-‘67 chrome emblem, has anyone found an EXACT reproduction for a chrome emblem? I have an original emblem in good condition which when held up next to a reproduction that was given to me, I do see subtle differences. And when looking at several of the vendors that sell the repros, they show the same subtle differences. I was trying to decide whether to get my original rechromed, or just use a reproduction. Now maybe I am too picky and nobody else cares, or perhaps I am looking at the wrong repros. I think that you can see a difference in the angle of the edges where the flat face of the VW meets the edges. Also, the little section between the V and the W looks a little different on some repros as well. But perhaps I am being too OCD and it won’t make a bit of a difference. So assuming I am allowed to ask a question about a vendor in this forum, which vendor carries the exact reproduction that is mentioned earlier in this thread?
Thank you! |
