If you check out the info in the Gallery about that pic, you'll see that the owner, Stuart Chase, put it on its lid before he handed it over to us. I had to replace the cage and roof after the race.

#4130 cracks

Rolling Eyes

7th in class out of nearly 40 though, in spite of inverted operation.

Cool

I rolled my '58 Bug 2 weeks after I got my driver's license in the early 70s. I've not been upside down except welding, working on a creeper, or under the dash or in bed since.

I strongly second third and fourth all who say don’t run a deep sump off road. I have seen what happens when they get snagged. Totally destroyed an engine case when it was ripped off. Bottom of case cracked out around the studs that hold in on.shojld they have been running a skid plate? Yeah, but still.

I just haven’t seen a need for the extra oil capacity off road. Bouncing around on bumpy ground is different than high G prolonged corners on the track. Oil is pretty thick, and it really doesn’t move around much when bouncing around. Corner hard and it will die from one side of the case to the other...so save the deep sump for the track. Don’t bother off road.

Thanks for all the reply's fellas!
I was more worried about long hill climbs. Two of my buddies have had to switch over to dry sump systems. But I must say these were long hill climbs at the dunes.
My driving will be in mountain trails, nothing serious. I'm sure i'm just over thinking it! Very Happy

Anything that I build to rev over stock gets a sump. I use the 1.5 quart slim sumps. Cut the bell off the pickup tube. Any sand car that’s got a hot enough motor to ride a significant wheelie or steep long uphill will fry without a sump.

If your not running a sump make darn sure your running a stock oil pump(always run a stock pump) , a bigger pump will pump all your oil into the top of the motor and make you more likely to starve. No wheelies, that’s a sure killer. And always check your oil level immediately after killing the motor and fill it to the stock line.

I’ve never had an issue setting up a car to have good clearance with a sump. You should always set you bump so you won’t hit the ground, that’s basic. I like to build my rear mounts similar to like a 10* mount so that adds sump clearance and put th motor at a better angle when running hills and under power when the weight is transferred to the rear tires.

Drysump is the king, but overkill pretty much always!

I have use sumps on racing engine where engine was tilted up a 10 degrees and higher.
Using a dry sump pump is a great idea, I just wished someone would start reproducing the Cummins/Isky dry sump pump. With it you could use a larger crank pulley.
