|
|
I'm at my wits end...... hes the run down.
bought my 62 with a new stock beam already installed with all new tierods, and ball joints, play was exessive and found PO had not tightened the pitmen arm tight enough, causing most of my 4'' of play. after that i noticed that the steering box output shaft would move up and down while turning the wheel back and forth.I replaced the steering box with a TRW box (I know, I know, I've read all about TRW boxes but this one feels pretty good) It still doesn't return to center but I'm thinking caster shims may help that. I have crawled all under the front end while someone wiggles the steering wheel but CANNOT find the last couple of inches of play. Any advise would be most helpful. |

Your 62 should be a king/link frontend.... no ball joints. I would check those iitems for wear/play and also check the adjustment of the box... it’s under the inspection cover in the spare tire well. |

Ball joints are what I ment to type, the PO replaced them when the beam was replaced. Is it best to find the play with the wheels off the ground, or on? |

The steering boxs top adjustment is pretty high up, maybe a half an inch. The old box had
Only one or two threads exposed above the lock not. It has the yellow paint on it from the factory. I'm scared to adjust it just yet, until I absolutely rule everything else out. The amount of play is the same as before the steering box replacement. |

It is imperative that the box be "CENTERED" when adjusting the "toe"!
The main indication that the "toe" was set incorrectly is excessive play in the steering wheel with two different boxes.
DO NOT attempt to adjust the box unless you are absolutely positive that it centered when the tie-rods were being adjusted for toe-in.
Tip . . . the position of the steering wheel is NOT a reliable indicator of the position of the box! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Señor y Salvador! |

Yes the box is completely centered, I haven't driven the car since installing the new box except for a quick mile or so test drive. The input shaft had a center line etched into from the factory. Toe has not been adjusted yet. |
