Tobias Bylund, distortion is always a problem with these VW’s and the gauge of metal. It sounds to me like your taking the usual precautions. It’s always hard with a panel you cannot access from the back. If you have a stud welder this can help, be careful and practice first as you don’t wanna volcano stretch areas either.
Play around with your heat and wire speed. This is vital. Also try hitting each spot with air after each spot. Sheet metal work is hard. Very hard, it’s an art and takes hours of practice.
Thank you for the great question and keep checking back. _________________ 1961 Type 1

Wish you were closer as I would love to just be able to come over and watch to get pointers. I keep telling myself "one day I'll get the motivation to invest in equipment and start learning how to weld", but that keeps getting pushed down the road and at 50, the window is starting to narrow rapidly. "Someday". lol. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

@thekera, thanks for your reply, yes i guess i have to fire up the compressor then to have some air to cool the spot welds. I only have one 3-phase outlet in my garage and i need that for the welder, but the compressor has an 80 gal tank so i thought of just letting it fill and then unplug it, should last a good while...
I dont have a stud welder, but i made washers that i can MIG and then attach my slide hammer to, so effectively i am using it in the same manner as a stud welder. But that bodyline does not want to move as easily when trying to massage it back out as it does move when welding. I need to try to limit my heat input even further. Maybe in the future i should opt for better fitting patches and use my TIG?
Thanks again for your contributions and your tips and tricks, sheet metal is for sure an art, a somewhat lost art at that, and this thread is a great learning tool for me! |

thekera thank you for your hard work showing The Samba how you work metal. Your dedication to the craft is inspiring. However I think you've convinced me I should pay someone well for your talents when I decide to take the body off my '66 to restore and paint it. I'll stick to fabricating things out of soft leathery materials and leave the metal work to an OCD Professional (TM) such as yourself.

Velolev, thank you for appreciating the work I put into these ol metal VW’s.
If me showing the work and dedication it takes to metal work these VW’s, helps people to realize not everyone can just cut up a VW and fab it back together properly then I’m glad. Everyone has there strengths it’s important to know what yours are and pay for the ones that others may be more experienced with.
I’ve seen some metal work on here that is just scary. I’m glad people may see that it’s just best to pay someone for there talents.
Thanks for checking out the thread.

So, it has been awhile since the last update. Progress has been slow as I have been busy with life as most of us are. I do have a guy lined up to dustless blast the body and pan.
As most of the body metal work is complete, I now have turned my attention to the chassis. The chassis did get new WW pans as I needed them installed when we were moving outta our old house. Im now preparing to remove a section of the bottom plate so that I can address the tunnel lines that the PO had messed with.
I ended up building a chassis rotisserie to make my life easier. I can't say enough about how much better this makes working on panels. I really enjoy making tooling for these VW's. It's fun to be able to spin a vehicle with the push of a hand.
Keep posted. More updates soon. Hopefully _________________ 1961 Type 1

I gained access to the tunnel. Pretty cool, to see this often not seen area. Going to be replacing the shift rod bracket, fuel line, secure clutch cable tube and fixing a broken heater cable tube. Also the bottom of the tunnel plate has some dents that need straightening. last but not least rust proof the inside of the tunnel.
Keep posted, thanks. _________________ 1961 Type 1

I wanted to replace the shift rod bracket since I have the bottom plate removed. The new bracket is from WW, the collar of the new shift rod bracket is much more robust than the OG.
NEW:
OLD VS. NEW:
I will be using a silicone bronze shift rod bushing, should make for nice silky smooth shifting.

Nice seeing correctly done welds. Excellent penetration and heat.
Let's see some more pics of the tunnel opened up. The factory welds on the tubes that fail so often. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Wcfvw69, thanks for the compliment on the welds.
I will try and get some close up photos, of the tubes in the tunnel. Almost all the securing welds on all of the tubes are broken.
Whoever, did the tube welds in the factory was assigned that job cause those welds would not be seen lol.

Here are a few more shots of the tunnel work. New fuel line, weld thru primer, and black zero rust. Same goes for the bottom plate.
I went ahead and threw the shift rod in the blast cabinet. I will be running the silicone bronze shift rod bushing.

I really like the way you're documenting your progress.
When I first looked at the red primer pic. I had no idea that the final coat of black paint in the tunnel would have a factory new fresh appearance.
That's just beautiful workmanship.
Sorry for the late response on your progress. Please keep the updates coming.
Have a great week. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Finished up welding in the bottom plate. Man, a lot of plug welds. This marks the end of the road for the body and pan metal work. Theres a few small things here and there.

Its been awhile since the last post. Been pretty busy with many different projects. I Figured with the weather nice, it was time to get the pan and body blasted. Went with a dustless blaster outfit. Came out looking pretty good.
Keep posted, Pan is off to powder coating. _________________ 1961 Type 1

Looks great.
How long do you have before surface rust starts? I know they spray something on to prevent rust for a couple days. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
