I'd like to see some pics of the bottom, and the engine since it's been sitting. Looks mostly complete. You might be able to knock a grand or 1500 in cash by going and looking at it. I only say that as it does need work going off the pics in the ad. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I think the two 5 gallon cans of solvent are hiding an ugly dent or a rust hole

So $7,000 or so give or take a little depending on condition is the general ballpark for this vintage Notch?
Also, forgive my total and complete ignorance, but should a '64 have a push-button dash? It doesn't seem that this one does?

I'm pretty sure there is some good rust hiding there, since there are no pictures of the trunk, or engine bay, or under the seats/floor in the ad. If it was as rust free as he's touting, there should be pictures from all over the inside and outside of the car. It also looks like a repaint to me (no chrome in the window rubbers), so no idea what may be hiding under that. You want a hands-on inspection of that project. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I forget the exact transition point between push-button and knobs, but it was sometime during '64. So it could be a '64-built car but actually a '65 model year.
My '65 (model year) was built in September 1964 but has knobs, not push-buttons. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Thanks for the info guys!
So... am I off base putting this in the whine thread? Is $8500 a potentially legitimate starting price for this car (assuming the body is indeed solid and there are some new parts that come with it)? I've spent too much time with other VWs to have any idea.
I was hoping I could find a nice project for less than that, but if that's the going rate these days...

Honestly I think that's a decent price since it's mostly complete and it runs. I'd still try and talk him down since it needs a headliner and a carpet/rubber mat kit. And that means the glass has to come out for the headliner work to be done. I'd contact the seller and see if he has more pics of under the trunks, and an engine shot or 2, along with some under the car pan shots. What we might call clean here in Michigan, California calls too far gone to fix.
It does have some bumps and bruises too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, it's got everything new VW buyers want. A beefed up motor, aftermarket custom wheels, and a fancy steering wheel, and don't forget PATINA! _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

I don't think thats a real ad. Kris lives just outside of Sacramento and has a 916 number |
Maybe there is more than one Kris in this world. That would sure be strange.
And since when to we have to "justify" keeping a car? _________________

I think he's selling it to fix his bus. Don't know if he already sold his Square he picked up a couple of years ago. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
