I'm in the process of removing the front quarter from my 57 oval. Looking at the spot welds on the firewall to quarter seam it doesn't look like I'll have much material left once I cut all the welds. It's the same on both sides, I think Hans was having a bad day and just spotted the heck out of it.

Has anyone seen this before and how did you work around it?

I would prefer to not totally destroy the quarters I'm removing.

thanks for any advice.

Jdub

Pretty sure it’s like that on mine too... that does hold the front shape of the car together.

The curved part of welds there at the botton are the worst. There are probably 100 there. Easiest way is cut that section out and weld a new piece in if re using the quarter. Grind the piece left off.

I’m going to soon be doing a front quarter on my 66 as well.

My firewall seam is the same, about 849 spot welds haha.

I hope you post your progress! Not many front replacements show anywhere.

How did you plan on opening the folded seam? I’m making a seam opener I think, to try to do a neat job and not make a mess of it

I’ve heard of using an air cut off wheel to break spot welds instead of drilling them out.

I have a lot of them on my '65 beetle quarter too but I don't think it's that many.. I'll look when I get home but I want to say the vertical row is spaced out a lot more with fewer overall spots.

do you have a seam buster?

this is what I use..

I think you can get to the other side of the quarter enough to run the seam buster between the front firewall lip and the quarter. You might try drilling a little bigger if it starts tearing the metal too much.

Groove that line of spot welds out with the edge of a grinder.

I totally agree, think I’m going to do mine the same way

If you take your time, & keep checking- you can grind until the quarter just separates. It will leave the firewall flange fully intact.

Time consuming but worth it

So I finally got a chance to start removing the quarters. Does anyone have a photo of the fuel tank supports? Mine have been pushed back a little, just wondering how far forward they need to go...

Here's a picture of mine after the quarter removal

Sorry I can’t help with oval measurements, but you are making great progress! So many spotwelds, it’s amazing how strong they are.

Even when there is the tiniest amount of spotweld left, it still holds strong.

Maybe for the measurements you need, you could ask in the oval section of the forum?

Keep up the great work!

Wow that looks great, you really made some progress!

All the sheet metal really cleaned up nice, car really looks solid!

What are you thinking of priming those hidden areas with?
