Yep, me again. Sorry
So we're getting close now but one more thing I'm stuck on is the placing of the three chrome luggage rails and the luggage bar itself on the deluxe rear shelf. Does anyone have any dimensions / photos without upholstery / etc?
Looks like all are held in place with bolts through the rear shelf rather than screws?
The location seems different in various buses. Top photo is Si Hitchmans old restored deluxe. Bottom photo more likely original. Positioning seems quite off between the two?!
Thanks so much to anyone who can help with this finishing touch!

The center one is obviously centered on the bus and here is the measurement for the side ones... The rails are on top of the 4th ribs from each side (which make the middle one lower than side ones !), as shown on the pictures :

Thanks a lot Florian, really helpful. Thanks also to Dave Hall, Rockstock, and especially 10' Doug who took a bunch of photos after removing his engine ..... although I'm not sure he did that just for me |

Okay, this is a good one.
It's exposed another little known detail - the positioning of the left/right luggage rails and the left/right luggage bar uprights.
Early (narrow)
Middle rail positioned in the centre dip of the luggage shelf panel.
Left/right rails positioned on top of the 6th rib out from centre of the rear shelf.
These rails butt right up to the corresponding upright in front.
The rails point towards the centre of the rear window pillars.
1951-1954
Late (wide)
Middle rail positioned in the centre dip of the luggage shelf panel.
Left/right rails positioned in the 6th dip out from centre dip of the rear shelf.
These rails (held with 4 scews/nuts) butt right up to the corresponding upright in front.
The rails point towards the outer edge of the rear window pillars.
1954-1955
-------
So the wide upright spacing appears narrower on earlier deluxes.
The change looks to have happened mid-late 1954.
I have seen a 52, a 53, and a few 54s (ie the example shown above) with the early narrow positioning.
All 55s seem to have the wide positioning.
(Btw, on my 55, the lhs rail holes are not in the centre of the dip)
The rails propably wouldn't have been at different heights to each other in the earlier narrow version as the horsehair sound deadening strips, fitted in all the dips, would have padded out the centre rail area.
-------
Cue everyone with replaced luggage shelf panels - or tribute deluxe owners - rushing out to their garage to check their rail positioning! _________________ -StockRocks- |

Just cracked a beer and logged on to explain the early / late difference. Low and behold ..... you've beaten me to it dude
The bother now is that my deluxe was manufactured in the first week of September 1954, just about the time of your predicted changeover. In the absence of any further knowledge I think I'm going to go with the late set up. Maybe rikkis bus will give up some more accurate dating answers this weekend at stanny hall 😉 Don't suppose you know the chassis number of the above pictured '54, or any other later 54's with the "late" setup Chris?
Wonder why this changed so late into production? Did horsehair definately phase out in '54? If so I guess you've nailed it! |

The uprights on Rikkis bus might help. But if I remember rightly he had no luggage rails from factory. So perhaps the uprights May be atypically? _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

The sound deadening was used throughout the bus years.
Yes, Rikki's bus doesnt currently have luggage rails fitted - but Im sure it would have done when new.
Completing this chart should help close in on the changever date:
20-093558 - August 54 - Milan Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-095904 - early Sept 54 - Rikki James Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-096323 - Sept 54 - Landbergsson Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-097352 - Sept 54 - Hausmann Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-099127 - late Sept 54 - TomTom Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-100396 - Oct 54 - Richie King Deluxe - Early narrow version
20-107934 - Dec 54 - Thom F Deluxe - version tbc
20-112232 - Jan 55 - 10ft Doug Deluxe - Late wide version
Rikki James' Deluxe:
Chart suggests it should be the Early narrow version...picture is a bit inconclusive. Guess the difference is only 30mm or so.
*Update 06 May 18: from looking in the engine bay, Rikki's bus has the holes there for the rails. The holes are drilled into the 6th rib, so Early narrow version.
Whilst looking through my pictures I've also concluded the Hornbecker and Milan Deluxes are ridiculously clean! _________________ -StockRocks-

Tom Tom is also early style. And so is the ex Andy Carol/Matt Keene bus. So I think your safe to go early Ben.

The change looks like it happened in Nov 54.
Maybe this was when the old driller got promoted, with the new guy wanting to make his mark.
Last Oct 54 bus was 20-102992.
20-104350 - Early narrow version (Nov 54)
20-104459 - ?
20-104503 - ?
20-106353 - ? (looks Late wide version)
20-107185 - Late wide version (very early Dec 54)
Last Nov 54 bus was 20-106736. _________________ -StockRocks- |
