The shift rod on Chewie's 52 is bent. It's the small diameter bit of the long shift rod that fits into the joiner piece at the front of the bus apparently.

A couple of questions:

Can I remove the shift rod on a barndoor out the front?

Are there any bushes supporting the long shift rod on a barndoor? Can you buy replacements if there are? There aren't any listed in the WW catalogue.

Is the long rod on a barndoor different to later buses? If so, which year did it change?

Has anyone straightened that part of a shift rod before successfully??

Thanks

the early shift rod was changed at vin 307 726 when they introduced a tube the long shift rod slides through, with rubber caps at the ends to keep the dirt out, and 2 plastic bushes attached to the rod, with the holes for the plastic bushes to snap into.

Earlier than that, there was no tube around the shift rod, nor holes in the rod for bushes to snap into. No plastic bushes were used. There were 2 metal bushes used, which snap in place where the rod slides through the frame. To replace these bushes, you must remove the long shift rod, which means you must remove the transmission.
They are shown in the 58 edition of the Parts List (not online)

The early tubeless style bus is prone to funky shifting on muddy roads due to grime getting between the rod and the bushes.

You can use a rod from a bus up to chassis 835 087, from a bus that used the two screw front coupler. One from a 307 xxx to 835 xxx bus (p/n 214 711 171) will have the two holes, that's all. This version of the part superceded the earlier version.
The pre 307 xxx rod is p/n 211 711 171.

I have never straightened one of those rods, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I never had a bent one.

Thanks for your help clara. I was hoping I could get the rod out without major hassle, I guess not.

Further to this, does anyone have any dimensions for a bd shift rod? I'm missing one for the 54 truck and need to make one pretty soon Wink

you could run it through with a very thin disk near the front under the rear floor and then weld it back together while underneath. With it disconnected both ends you can spin it to weld it up...not ideal but it would work ok if your not keen on pulling the transmission

Would some metal file work to the joiner end not work too?

How does that bit get bent, im interested? Smile

Hi

Scotty no more solution for you ,try telepathy !!!!i think Mark gave you the best solution

Dai if you need others....
The long BD shift rod is 158 cm , main diameter is 22 mm and 15 mm for the gearbox coupler area and 15 mm for the short shift rod coupler

The long split 64 shift rod is 165 cm, main diameter 18 mm and 15 mm for gearbox coupler and 20 mm for the short shift rod coupler

You can use a complete(long+short) late split shift rod on a barndoor but you have to narrow the smal shift rod (about 15 cm) and modified the gear shift lever area

Perfect, thanks for the help Pascal! Very Happy

One more question, are the holes for the grub screws 180 degrees out? I think they are but just want to confirm before finishing the one I'm making off! I havent got a front shift rod to offer up to it at the moment either! Laughing

Hey Steetwagens, I am also looking for the answer to the same question. I will be building a long shift rod using the original and parts from another one. I need to confirm the total length, from end to end and also if the grub screw notches are 180 degrees apart.

One more question, if I am installing a tunnel type transmission in place of the split case style, does this change the shift rod length?

We been making new shift rods out of 3/4” chromoly.... cut out old ends and, spin in lathe and weld in nice new straight tube. Scarface shifts like butter!

Hey Josh,

That was my next option. So how do you line up the notches? Do you simply put trans in neutral and shifter in middle straight position and go tack in the ends?

Another question to the same topic:

If I have this coupler postion in neutral, I guess I have a problem.
Any known issues on this?
Help very appreciated...
Thanks.

To be more specific, I can't switch to 2rd and 4th because it touches the rim and the stick touches the bench.
There isn't anything where I can change the shift rod length, is it?
Everything looks stock. I still have the rear coupling with open rubber section.
Anyone any comment? Thanks a lot.

Any chance it is a reproduction cab floor ?.... Rolling Eyes
If so I'd bet the hole for the gear lever is not at the correct position.

Indeed. It is a later floor.
Unfortunately I don't have any reference measures or funky green panels of a BD to check this.

This is the position of the front shift rod in 2nd gear....

I even have these weird american units on my tape Very Happy

Could that measure be ok or is it far from correct?
I assume that the vertical sheet metal position is correct in relation to the chassis.
Thanks for help.

Looks too far back.

Mine is around 55mm to the back of the big hole and 110mm to the front

This is RHD, assume it no difference for LHD
