|
|
I've had this question for the longest time. I feel like I can't be the only one.
Due to the slant of the dune buggy gas tank mounting area, there is unused gas as a result. I feel like it's quite a lot too.
I've got a Citation, but they all seem to have the same slant I am talking about.
Has anyone run into this problem?

Yes its a common problem with most "manx" style (and other) kit cars....
IF it were not such a pain I would remove hood and tank and move gas outlet bung to lowest portion of tank....

Yep it was that way on my Allison, I ran out of gas and could see gas in there. So I had to get a paint stick and put marks on it. Seems like I could only use about 3.5 gals till I would be back down to the lowest mark on the stick. I'm happy I got a level 10 gal tank on my Sportster. I have no gauge but I have a way to stick the tank to see what the level is . |

I took a look at mine and it does not have this problem. Maybe it is limited to some of the earlier tanks? |

Not tank issue as I believe all tanks are made with pretty much same design, its a issue on how tank mounts to body... Some fiberglass buggies increased angle of tank mount so it could get stock tank under hood.... increased angle puts a portion of tank below where tank bung is located... As in OP's sketch....

Your tank looks to be different year/vintage than mine...
This is situation with my buggy... Many others too...

Mine's about the same, I usually get down to the last gallon, but still have a stick laying around. My VW electric gas gauge in the speedo is not completely accurate and I gave up trying to get it so. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

I know this is an old post, but I have the same problem. Is there any other way to remedy this? My gauge reads to where the reserve is but know gas to the carb, but there is about half a gallon left in the tank. If I put about 2 gallons in, the gauge will read almost half full. Do I have to keep checking the level with a stick?... Sheesh!!!!! |

Yup....get a new tank and have the outlet professionally moved. |

jspbtown.. The tank is new, but what do you mean the outlet? The one that comes out the bottom of the tank? |

Not only does it leave gas up there is messes with the use of a reserve handle too. My first buggy used a stock Bug reserve tap and handle. With the change in tank angle the available reserve was only around 0.7 gallons. _________________

Yes...you can move the outlet bung to a better spot on the tank so you get more of the fuel out of the tank. |

jspbtown I just might do that, since I'll be working on the new beam and the tank will be out. Hope to take care of it soon... Thank you... |

As for the gas gauge not indicating precisely how much gas is in the tank, and the gas seeming to go very fast in some parts of how full the tank is compared to how fast it goes in other parts of the tank...
This is because the VW Bug stock tanks are NOT simple rectangular shape. Like most ALL cars. For instance, my Dodge Durango has this same issue. It would help if the engineers who design the cars would take the time to calibrate the gauge face, so the gauge would reflect how much gas is in the tank. It would NOT be a difficult process to simply take one tank, add liquid (it need not be gasoline) 1 gallon or 1 liter at a time, and note where the needle of the gauge is at for that much liquid. Then print all of the gauge faces to reflect that.
We as enthusiasts, can do so if we are willing to take a gauge apart and re-paint the face, to re-paint the marks as we add fuel 1 gallon or 1 liter at a time. It's a PITA, but it can be done. _________________ Richard

I have yet to own a vehicle with a perfectly linear fuel gauge. To me it's not really that important as I like to run on the top half whenever possible. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit.
