I picked up this badge recently and have been tapping away the hours on Google researching it.
Turn's out this is the story - 'The badge was issued to local parishioners while celebrating the consecration of the newly built St Christophorus church in Wolfsburg on the 12th August 1951. Religious freedoms, both Catholic and Protestant, had been supressed under the Nazis and there had been no official meeting place for local Christians during their reign. With Hitler gone and with the help of locally stationed British Armed Forces, the Wolfburg plant was restarted. VW's then president, Heinrich Nordhoff, commisioned these badges as a show of solidarity with Wolfburg's population and signified VW's commitment to rebuilding the town.'
Nice story, huh? Well, kinda, I've just put the badge up for sale |

I heard the same story when I bought mine, but it's completely different to yours. Your's looks more like something that would have been handed out in the early 50's as the one I have, just assuming, may have been a reproduction.
