Larry's truck never had a correct key with it, so locking the treasure chest doors wasn't an option.
Gabriel and Daniela from GAB VW Key hooked us up with a correct set of "V" profile keys cut to the factory stamped code. Thanks guys!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had difficulties getting the keys to turn the locks, but knowing the quality of GABVWKEY's work I knew it was an issue with the locks and not the keys.

Took the treasure chest door latches apart.
VW used pins that are peened over to hold the latches together, so I first ground the heads off the peened end.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

If you decide to do this, watch out because there are 2 loaded springs inside and stuff will go flying Shocked This picture is all the parts, but dont use this as a guideline for reassembly because at this point I didn't have all the pieces back in the correct order for the photo Confused (had to figure it out later)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I cleaned the parts in a mix of acetone and PB Blaster and removed 50+ years of gunk.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The lock cylinder is held in by a tiny set screw that has to be removed first.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This little baby is the issue...it's the lock cylinder. The wafers are stuck and wont fully retract causing it to hang up when you try to turn it with the key.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had to soak it in my acetone/PB concoction to get it to come apart.
I have taken automotive lock cylinders apart many times over the years so I knew what to expect.

NOTE: If you attempt this be very careful!
The lock cylinder contains 6 tiny springs that want to fly to the nearest hiding place never to be seen again. Also, DONT mix up your wafers, they have a specific order that coincides with the key cuts.

I cleaned everything and lubed with a light oil then reassembled in reverse order.
I forgot to get a picture of the correct order of parts before reassembly, I'll get one when I do the other side.
I then secured the pins by adding a tack of weld bead on the heads.

Nice work on that lock assembly. Those types of repairs are always very satisfying when they are complete and things work as new again.

You made that look way too easy! Fortunately, I was able to free up the internals on mine without having to open her up. I'm sure others appreciate the quick overview of the process you underwent to bring that mamajama back into service. Thanks.

Nice work! I hope to get to meet you guys at this Saturday's "Spring Thing" meet at the Schafly Bottleworks! If you spot me , please introduce yourself. I "think" I'll be bringing the '59 DC, maybe, maybe not, I've got a garage full of deserving VW's that all want to go too.

Metal work done on the right quarter and rocker.

This may be goofy to see but somehow we ended up with 2 right side battery trays so I decided to "flip" one to use on the left.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So to make it "correct" for a left side and to actually have a functioning drain I cut out the center and flipped it back. Didn't take long.

Fitting up the metal on the left side and welded.
This is the corner that was originally wrecked and sculpted back with a full can of Bondo. Shocked The hammer and heat work I did helped it come out real straight...I'm real happy with the fittment

All the metal work is finished on the rear half! Dancing
Been thrashing on body work to get it ready for a coat of epoxy to seal it up before I move on to the cab. Once the cab is at this stage I'll lay down some high build and start final blocking.
Everything came out real nice...no areas of Rage Gold are thicker than 1/8"

Larry wanted to make this a usable tool storage area so he decided on a sprayable bedliner.
Raptor from U-pol had a high satisfaction rating and offered a tintable version, so it was used.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Raptor was simple to mix with the same basecoat that is being used on the body of the truck so the color will match. I used the supplied schutz gun at about 70psi...worked like a charm.

Finally got to sandblast the remainder of the truck...the cab.

Uncovered some ugly stuff, but not surprising.

Looks like old accident damage repaired with blobs of brass.
There was body filler all over the inside of the cab...right wheel house, headlight support and left A pillar showing evidence of damage.

Also blew through at the bottom of the windshield.

Got it all cleaned out and in etch primer...ready for repair.

Peeled off the old front end support frame brackets...what a pain, Hanover certainly made sure they were welded strong.

Then I lined the new ones from Wolfy West up and welded them in.

After looking at the new one on the left side, I decided to fully weld all the seams because the OG brackets were that way from the factory. WW had spot welds holding them together (Maybe just to keep everything in line while installing)
Might be overkill, but with the steering box right behind it I didn't want any issues.
