Not so sure unless there was something different on the bus.
Typically with the York style compressor the steel compressor bracket bolted directly to the drivers side end of the cooling shroud......and the compressor pulley was direct drive to a pulley sandwiched behind the fan on the crank. No idler......as belt tensikn was taken up by a pivot/clevis bolt driving against the steel mountibg plate mounted to the end of the cooling shroud......but that was on 411 and 412.
Perhaps this was an idler take off for of the air conditioner pump to drive a smog pump?
Show us shere it was mounted in relation to the shroud please.

It doesn't look Factory or even dealer installed based on the crudeness of the bracket.
Those old compressors were HUGE, and VW AC installations were all done with aftermarket kits at the dealership.
But I've never seen a idler pulley run on the back side of a V-belt, so I'd be willing to guess it's a backyard A/C conversion. _________________ Good Luck

Thanks Busdaddy!....learn something new every day.
Just wondering what was different on the compressor or its bracket on the bus.....that it required an idler......different compressor pulley diameter?

I can't recall all the names at the moment, but there was at least 3 different compressor mounts for a type 4 engine, DPD, CCool and a third that escapes me ATM, maybe VPC?.
One used an adjustable idler, one had slotted holes on the mount plate and one used shims between the bracket and shroud to adjust belt tension. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I have worked with tbe slotted holes version.....ok....not ideal but worked. You can run out of room to adjust if the belt stretches too much.
The one with shims between bracket and shroud was a common one on 411/412. Just have never seen the idler version. Ray |
