For those that are not currently aware, the Currituck County Board of Commissioners has instituted a new beach parking permit policy, which includes the beach from the access in Corolla up to the NC/Va state line. In summary, (and unless you are a Currituck County resident, or you meet one of their other exceptions), one of two options are available:
Seasonal – This permit is assigned to a specific vehicle and is good for the entire vacation season. Seasonal permits are free to county residents and property owners. Others may purchase a Seasonal permit for $150.
10-Day – This permit is available for purchase ($50) by individuals who want to park on the four-wheel drive beach but are not Currituck County residents or property owners and are not renting a home on the off-road area. This would apply to day-visitors or those staying anywhere other than the 4-wheel drive beach.
Parking Permits are required and must be prominently displayed on all vehicles parked on the beach strand of the 4 x 4 area beginning the Friday before Memorial Day through 11:59 PM Labor Day.
(Through multiple conversations with deputies at the Currituck County Sheriff's Department, I have confirmed that appropriate 2WD vehicles are legally entitled to access on the "four wheel drive beach". Their contact number is 252-232-2216)
Here is a link that details the new Currituck County beach parking permit policy. It also includes contact information (Currituck Tourism Department phone and email) for those that may have any questions or concerns.
