Like vwwestyman, I too was inspired by the seasonaly warm weather. Drove the bus all over town running errands this morning. While I was out I picked up engine and transaxle oil. I hit on the climb Home hard and got everything all heated up. When I got home I drained all the oil while it was still hot. It was fun fitting 2 drain pans under the bus at once. I could have just dumped both into one pan but i wanted to inspect both oils separately, looking for metals and what not, besides really dirty both looked ok. It was 2500 Miles on the engine oil and 12k miles on the transaxle oil. Figured I should do it now in anticipation for our Tucson road trip in 7weeks. The tomorrow I’ll check the valves while it’s cold. It’s dark now and I think we are going Xmas tree shopping.

Valves adjusted (2,3 & 4 all a tad tight), new cork valve cover gaskets and topped off the oil. I also cleaned out my UNI prefilters and wiped down the engine bay. I got up before the family and had a beer for breakfast as I did the work. Christmas tree is up and life is good!

I got the day off work and started my vacation a day early! I decided to change the belt and hot start relay. While I was under the bus I noticed the one of the drivers side CV boot was torn in half, Ugh...what to do, what to do? I could have pulled both axles, went to the shop and rebuilt both axles with new boots and reinstalled them tonight when it’s like 15* out. I decided to install the complete EMPI axle I’ve been carrying around in the bus for the last few years. It was pre-greased and ready to go. When I took the old axle off several of the bolts were loose and one was broken. I was able to easily remove the broken bolt from the transaxle flange and I found a replacement bolt in my stash. After cleaning all the bolts in gasoline and removing the dirt and grime from the flanges, the new axle went in smoothly. I decided I should check the bolts on the other side, four of the bolts on the hub side were loose and all the bolts on the the transaxle side were tight. Drove to town for lunch, to wash it and fill it up. Road tripping in the morning!

Rich. I’m sure you know. But retoruqe after 500 miles are so. Wildthings uses torque spec for Vanagon on a late bay. Not sure if that applies to an early bay. Not sure why it wouldn’t Think

I plan on checking them when I get I get home and when I get to Tucson. I think I got close the the torque specification with the 11mm wrench on the end of the 6mm Allen. Wink

Checked all the axle bolts this morning, they were all tight. Also aired up the tires to 32psi, they were only at 25.

Agreed. I've often thought about building a second Bus like this. Seeing the pellet load reminded me of a time when I had my interior stripped out I went and picked up I don't know how many bales of hay. But, I'm in the Southeast with heat, humidity, and more humidity.

I don't know how I missed this thread originally. Nicely done....

Thanks guys.

Hikelite, my side tent is a SpaceMaker. It is a driveway tent and it is similar to the Add-A-Room the Bus Depot sells.

Took a few days but I get the bus back on the road. My family was out of town and I went on 3 MTB rides in the 3 Days they were gone. I removed all the rims, including the spare and took them all to the tire shop Saturday morning. I had the 4 new tires mounted and balanced. I also had them take the least worn tire and had that put on the spare rim, it was balanced as well. While I had the rims off I painted them and hubcaps. I removed both axles, disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled with new EMPI CV boots. While it was up on jack stands I also adjusted to the brakes and the steering box. Ready for the Monday morning commute.
