I just went on Amazon and searched the Stant 10623 fuel cap. When it downloaded a pop up at the top of the page said 'check to see if this cap fits your vehicle' (or something like that). When I selected 1959 VW transporter, it said this cap doesn't fit your vehicle?
Do I ignore that? I have a '59 SC..... _________________ My brother & I on the roof of Dad's Splitty circa 1967 - I'm the half pint with the skinny legs! |

OK, just went to Stant's website. There catalogue only lists VW transporter going back to the 1960 model.....
Is there any difference pre 1960 to bus gas caps or is it the same cap, same fit for all split window models? _________________ My brother & I on the roof of Dad's Splitty circa 1967 - I'm the half pint with the skinny legs! |

I got out the box to verify, and now I'm confused. I know I gave NAPA the part number stant 10623. My box has a different number (their own?)
NAPA 703-1220 gas cap-motorcycle/non

It's the same size 55-67 so you should be fine if that is the correct Stant part #
Edit: I see 10623 and 11623 both mentioned on this site as the same cap and correct. |
Thanks Ev.....
I ordered it from Amazon and even with postage to Australia it was only $12 total! Bargain.
rebapuck, yes Napa (and others) have their own part numbers for the same product. It's still made by Stant..... _________________ My brother & I on the roof of Dad's Splitty circa 1967 - I'm the half pint with the skinny legs! |

I just wanted to add another voice in praise of the Stant 10623 cap. It is a handsome looking cap that has solved all leakage problems. I can park on crowned streets with more than a half tank of gas and don't have to worry.
For some reason the cap isn't listed as a match for early busses, but it certainly fits just fine. Best $6.50 I've ever spent on my bus. _________________ '64 standard microbus

I bought a little one gallon tank from Boyd Welding and it included this cap.
The inside is perfect as well as the gasket being interchageable with OG VW caps.
It has this exquisite method of anti-slosh and in-out vent. Inside is a
gravity/inertia poppet valve.
Boyd Welding wouldn't divulge who their supplier was but they sell the cap
sku#27017. http://www.fueltankparts.com/twist-cap-w-aluminum-neck-vented.html
This gas cap is absolutely perfect. |

Ev; I ordered the Stant 10623 for my '67 bus. I have a new Wolfsburg West replacement tank in it and the cap is very hard to get on. I'm not sure it goes on all the way so I decided not to use it.
Any idea why this would be?

Is there a gas cap 'original factory equipment' visual guide here on this site ?
I'm curious what came on a '57 SC & '65 Kombi. |
The are identical and look like the ad link posted above, even though that one is a repro.

Ev, do you know where I can get one of these? An original?

Someone else would have to answer that as I have not used either myself.

I added this from another gascap thread in case someone stumbles onto it.

I tried the stant and the f100 cap. The stant was loose side to side and the rubber rode on the ends. It fit terrible. The F100 depth made it unusable. I bought the oe brazilian one and that fits ok but still get gas smell. I thought maybe the neck is leaking but if I put the oil filler cap on the smell goes away. Any other caps to try? I measured the spout at 53 mm where the rubber rides. |
Can you post up photos of the caps you purchased?
Here are the three you mentioned off my vehicles. '66 Ford is left, Stant is right, OG VW is lowest.
This picture the '66 Ford is top left, VW is top right, Stant is bottom
All fit each other.
How does your neck opening look? This is my '65 bus'.
Are the ramps in good shape or thrashed? Is it an original tank?
Yes, the Stant and Ford tended to go off center a teeny bit but they still sealed.
All three caps allow fumes to escape so you will still smell gas. What density is the gas you're smelling?
I suspect the new iterations of gascaps have been made to different fitment standards.
I'm also sorry for your troubles...I hate leading someone down a wrong path if it was me. |
Any photos of current versions of caps? |
