Could Patent be original maker and Licenz be other company maker? |

Sort of on the track of this thread, but a question…
I have a 67 single cab with no church key lock on the gas door. Finding a locking gas cap has so far been unfruitful. In order to have some security on the gas, is it possible to put a 66 or earlier church key door on my 67? Would it work? Thanks. _________________ Larry in OB

I think it's possible but i don't think it will be a bolt on solution. I went downstairs to look, so check out these pics and see what you think.
66 lid:
67 lid:
66 hinge:
67 hinge:
The hinges are way different.
If you picked up a 66 lid and a 67 hinge you could tack weld them together and bolt it on. I didnt measure the lids, i can if you like. They look the same other than the 67 has the finger cutout. The 67 also has the finger indent in the body and the 66 doesn't.
The 66 lever on the inside of the lid should hook to the rim of the 'opening' and lock but someone could get a finger under it and pull.
You could get another 67 lid to chop on and close the finger cutout and put a finger indention blocker piece (custom) that could stop a finger from sliding under it. Then chop a church key latch in it. Keep your original one.
Assuming a single cab and a deluxe have the same parts since I have not crawled all over a single cab (yet).
Just brainstorming over here... |

Car parts store, 60-66 locking or normal Ford F-100 cap, fits our bus tanks perfectly and are vented.
I'll give you a used one with keys if you come get it. |

Thanks 'Bird. Clearly my idea was a no-go. I really appreciate you taking the time to post those pictures.
Barry - thanks! I will try to hit you up next time I head out your way. _________________ Larry in OB

I've gone from chuch-key>to '67 and it's a cut-and-weld the whole right side and a little top and bottom too. Going the other way 'round you're going to get wonked by the thumb depression but I guess that could be hammered out.
Why not just add the church key lock slightly above your existing thumb pull?
Any of the caps on page 39 will work: http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.aspx?Page=39 |

Back to gas caps for a second, BarryL, I wonder if you can shed some light on this....I bought the Stant 10623 for my '67 bus and it builds up quite a vacuum. Did I get a defective one, or is this cap not actually vented?
Does anyone know of a good, vented cap to buy?
Thanks! |

That's the one. Next time I have my bus out I'll look into sucking on it. It doesn't sound too tasty. I don't recall there being a hole but I could be wrong.
Thanks for the links. The Boyd cap does look good, especially with it's advanced venting.
Thanks! |

I added this from another gascap thread in case someone stumbles onto it.

I tried the stant and the f100 cap. The stant was loose side to side and the rubber rode on the ends. It fit terrible. The F100 depth made it unusable. I bought the oe brazilian one and that fits ok but still get gas smell. I thought maybe the neck is leaking but if I put the oil filler cap on the smell goes away. Any other caps to try? I measured the spout at 53 mm where the rubber rides. |
Can you post up photos of the caps you purchased?
Here are the three you mentioned off my vehicles. '66 Ford is left, Stant is right, OG VW is lowest.
This picture the '66 Ford is top left, VW is top right, Stant is bottom
All fit each other.
How does your neck opening look? This is my '65 bus'.
Are the ramps in good shape or thrashed? Is it an original tank?
Yes, the Stant and Ford tended to go off center a teeny bit but they still sealed.
All three caps allow fumes to escape so you will still smell gas. What density is the gas you're smelling?
I suspect the new iterations of gascaps have been made to different fitment standards.
I'm also sorry for your troubles...I hate leading someone down a wrong path if it was me. |
Any photos of current versions of caps? |

Hi all,
Does anyone know which VWs this locking gas cap is compatible with? The Gasket measures 60mm OD, and center mechanism (the one with the two locking tabs) 34 mm OD. Thanks in advance!
