We got over 24 mpg coming home from camping on the I5 doing 65 mph and higher when passing the trucks. It's the Type 1 DP Engine 74mm Stroke, 88mm bore, Web-cam 163, Stock VW heads and Dual DRLA 36mm carbs. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

informative posts.
1973 mostly 2 passengers. Oh maybe one German Shepherd too.
2055 engine type 4
electronic points
Dual 44's
Freeway flyer Trans
185/65/15 tires
40 psi
I run it kinda hard.
10 mpg around town
13 mpg Hwy.
Mileage might be a little higher due to reduced overall od tire size to speedo ratio.

I've been getting 19-21mpg. I have a 1776 type 1 engine with a w110 cam, stock exhaust and just nice stock heads and crank. This is 90% city driving. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

It has almost been another half-decade since I visited this thread?
NaranjaWesty has just knocked out 2,000 miles in the last ten days,
ave 16 mpg @ 65 mph
IF I behave and go 55 (damn near impossible) I can get 18-20mpg.
BobD last got 16.7 mpg
Chloe got 22 mpg
See you in 2022 . . .

I am 12,233 miles into the itinerary this summer. So far my overall gas mileage with stock Solex carbs and an average cruising speed of 70-72 mph, is 19.2 mpg. In the mountains, it drops to just below 16mpg. On the flats 22 mpg. I once got 24 mpg to a tank, but that was because I was only going 50-55 mph with a good tailwind.

Ahhhh to be back in the days of a fresh engine and 22mpg…
We're currently enjoying a Totally and Completely Floored lap of the country at 17mpg average, between 62 and 68 MPH. Cylinder heads have yet to hit 390°, and I do not think my oil pressure relief valve has closed on the highway since July.
Last time I was going to retire this engine, I ran across the desert on 1.5 quarts of oil to "see what happens…" This time, I'm going to lean out the main jet until I get the heads to 425° and see what fuel economy turns in to. Next year, hmmm, turbocharger?

So where are you?
I just did Lordsburg NM to Phoenix on I-10 @ 60 mph, 102* afternoon temps, top CHT 416*, fuel economy 20.7 mpg.
Guess who forgot to richen the mixture coming down off the highlands??

A recent 500 mile drive up to the mountains in my HEAVILY loaded Westphalia bus and back rewarded me with 20 MPG.
Stock 1971 engine with the exception of the 90.5 pistons; which bump the displacement up to a 1776. I was thrilled with that mileage. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

So I'm finally gonna post here after 15,000 miles and a year and a half trending.
17-18 Mpg daily
Avg 22.8 on my last 3000 mile trip
Lovin it! |
Haven’t posted here in 4 years.
The stats above were on my old 2109.
Current mileage of my 2175 with 20k on it are:
16-18 in town, it’s soooo much fun ripping through the gears in town
21-22 on the highway (usually loaded) with a high tank of 24.5 (in 2018)
Don’t know the last time my oil hit 220* or my head temps hit 400*. It runs as cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce. _________________ __________

What are y’all averaging for cruising speed? Those are nice numbers! I’m a millennial so I can’t keep my foot out of it.

what are you cruising at? 40-45 mph on highway! And what kind of munchies we talking about? Probably not wise when you cross into Utah.

You're lean.
Jetted correct should yield ~20mpg on the highway. And ~15mpg around town with a light foot. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc
