Not sure what this is and/or a previous owner thing. Any idea as I will remove it if not needed and I do not think I will need it.

I don't recognize it as stock.
Maybe something to keep something in place in the trunk via a strap or something else that clips into that?

Pretty sure that is a spare tire carrier latch from a 66-77 Ford Bronco. Have no idea why someone would put one on the back of the seat though.

Put it on ebay! If it's original, you might get some extra cash for VW parts. Bronco stuff is outrageous these days. Shocked

Only pic I could find of just the stock latch:

Damn, that's an obscure rabbit-out-of-a-hat ID!

Back ordered! Time to get rich! Very Happy

Post the eBay auction here if you do it, I'd be interested to watch and see what it goes for.

Oh My Gosh! wow wee. May I will take it off and carry it around waiting for the bronco guys...there are a few of the oldies in the region. I have mailed the company and see if I may strike up a deal.
Thanks for finding out what it is bkeith85.

No problem! Besides my Squareback, I have an old Bronco and an '85 Mustang GT. I've had the Bronco since '94 and have had it almost completely apart a few times. You could probably show me spring or a bolt for a Bronco and I could ID it.

Now if you find a Type 3 with a Mustang engine in it, I could tell you about that too. Very Happy
