Could someone please help me identify the trans in the picture below? Maybe year and/or model? Thanks!

the serial number is on the bottom: 9340706

the other number higher up is a casting number for the housing. it starts with 113, ergo it's from a type 1. ( beetle, ghia, bus, thing ) It does not start with a pair of letters, which is characteristic of an IRS trans, so it's a swingaxle trans case

according to https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php it's a 1955 swingaxle trans.

Good reference Mal.

BUT...from that reference page:
Quote:
1965 Engine 1200A
Jan 115 500 000 9 289 000*** 7 552 095 6 957 154 3 989 871
Feb 115 574 322 9 384 780*** 7 653 509 7 044 273 3 994 992

Shows that it would be a 1965, not a 1955. The number 9 340 706 falls in between the transmission numbers in blue above.

9 289 000 < 9 340 706 < 9 384 780

The picture shows it by shape to be a 1962+ tunnel trans case not a pre-1961 split trans case.
