I have a 72 westy with the ashtray cup holders. I've used on one of the cup holders for my phone as it sets up nicely to see GPS. I'm going on a two week road trip and would like to use both cup holders, for cups. The CD style doesn't work that well because the cups get in the way. Anyone have a favorite mount option they want to share?
I saw this option on the vanagon site:

I have Wizgear mounts in 3 cars and love them. I have the mount that clips to the vent louvers. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

I use a wizgear in my truck and love it. Magnetic mounts are the way to go.
In my Bus I use a mount that is meant to go into your CD player. It works fairly well and doesn't involve sticking things to my Bus dash. I am looking for a better solution though so I am watching this thread..

Look around. They should have a magnetic base...its a build your own set up. Magnetic base and plop it on the dash top _________________

Thanks as always skills. I won't be home until Monday to check it out, but given your description, I'm assuming there's metal under the top of the dash. Is that correct? If so, seems like a great solution. _________________ ------------------------

Your whole dash top is metal, unless someone did some custom work to it _________________

Here is my ghetto ass solution:
Took some business card magnets (had em at work), cut them up to fit the back of my IPhone case (works great, stick the phone on the fridge, underneath the car for flashlight feature, etc), take a piece of scrap steel lying around, bend at approx. 110-120*, to match the contour of the dash, so a flat piece of steel is facing you in the captians chair. Use the magnets on the scrap steel, so it sticks to the metal dash. stick your phone to your new phone holder!
Note: might need counterweight on TOP of the bent piece of steel, again, use the sticky magnets and a weight of some kind. I used a flat 2" pulley.
I have been using this handy little device for 2 years now, and in all the pics of my cockpit this little bracket is juuust out of frame on every single one. I'll try and post one later. Beauty of this is no screws, clamps, nothing, just magnets on metal. MAGIC

After a few tries/fails, I wanted to pass along my mobile phone setup that i really like from RAM Mounts. I used the magnetic mount and arm that Skills suggested onto the top of the dash (requires nothing permanent). I tried their X-grip, but hated it...so bought another magnetic mount and placed a flat metal plate under my phone case and perfect-a-mundo.

I couldn't find the magnetic mount. Have a link?
How secure is this setup, ie magnets?
I was thinking about a suction cup on the windshield with the arm resting on the dash. _________________ ~Kevin

This setup is fantastic, the magnets are very strong...the only downside is that ain't cheap (2 magnet bases + arm). _________________ ------------------------

You cannot beat this. $20, and it takes no effort to put the phone in or take it out, and yet I have never had it fall out. I actually have one in my bus, and loved it so much, I got one for my Fiat Abarth 500c. It not only holds the phone well, and with good visibility, but it also has a wireless quick charger built in. That means that I dont have to plug my phone in every time I put it in the holder. I just pop it in, the weight of the phone causes the two sides to fall down and grip the phone, and it starts charging. I just lift the phone up and the sides release, and take it with me charged up! It uses a suction base, and since my dash is rough, I bought a cheap-o flat gps mounting plate that uses 3m sticky tape on the bottom for better adhesion, although if your dash isnt a half painted and slightly rusty mess like mine, you should be fine with just the suction mount.

I just use an Aukey vent mounted magnet that connects with a magnet on the back of my phone.
I use the vent on the left of the steering wheel, which is quite convenient for Waze and Google maps. If I need to charge as well I run a cable up to a powerbank on the dash.
its unintrusive and doesnt require sticking anything to the dash.

I like the additional wireless charging feature. I wonder if you could convert the suction cup holder into something magnetic.
I notice this device uses a ball socket like RAMM products. I wonder if one could attach this charger/holder combo on top of a RAMM mount?
I'm surprised RAMM isn't offering this. Great idea if your phone can be charged this way. _________________ ~Kevin
