Very nice! Beyond money saved, I enjoy making my own replacement metal too, when feasible. Might not save a lot of time, but it's rewarding all the same... _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

thanks! me too! I think this is a fairly obscure part that isn't readily purchased. I could be wrong. but its always more fun to make it yourself...even from just pictures! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I know of at least Jeff who makes them: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2132666
For $75: might have been worth it, or maybe not. It's all a balance between time & money. I would have first tried to make it, and if I f'd it up, well, there's at least a more competent manufacturer to turn to hahaha. _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

This morning I welded in the lower rear hem crimp pieces and finished the speaker brackets. They look much more legit in primer.
Next up is the crimp piece on the cargo door and I guess after that is the heater log. I'm not looking forward to that. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I had limited time this morning so I planned to do something short and sweet. It wasn't until after I started I (once again) realized that nothing is ever easy. My plan was to weld in the claw-like clip pieces that hold the headliner around the fresh air box.
Well it turns out the panel vans already have a piece there to hold in the cardboard headliner panels... So those had to come out:
here's what I'm referring to:
As I was drilling/grinding off the spot welds I found out that there was some residual rubber stuck on the other side left from the air flaps. It either caught on fire and/or melted and stunk up the garage.
piece removed:
that was all the time I had. I'll get the clip pieces welded in next. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I got the headliner clips around the fresh air box welded in.
While I was grinding down the welds I set fire to a hidden rodent nest in the void in front of the sun visor. oops. here's a pic of that area:
I dug out all the remnants of it and found a pamphlet on the tibet cultural house from the late 80s. interesting.
I started cleaning up the heater log:

I got sidetracked yesterday when my compressor went out. I was working on the heater log but I didn't take any pics.
I made and welded in the cargo door crimp piece:
test fitting the curves:
clamping:
welded:
This rust hole where the cargo floor meets the seat pedestal had been irking me:
so I did some micro welding:
need to clean it up more. getting in there is a bitch
I also did a hydrostatic test on my compressor while I had it dismantled.
It held about 292PSI of water for over an hour. I think thats a pass. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I looked at this laying on my back the other day and decided I need to start building a rotisserie

Nice repair on that heater log. Rotisseries make life so much easier. I wish I had one from the start of my project. I looked for an outfit to bend square tubing to make one like Glidekings, but did not find anyone who could do it. |

PM sent!
Welded in the passenger side headliner claw strip behind the sunvisor
I started cutting out the heater pipe that will be replaced by the heater log. Man the VW factory made certain that this pipe will not come loose from the vehicle body under any circumstances, including a nuclear detonation. It is welded not only to the floor all around but the rear firewall below the gas tank as well. Cutting it out is not fun at all....
...Thus... I started building a tipper. This will take a few working sessions to complete. These are the mounting plates. I'm going to borrow some design ideas from the rotisserie thread.

I feel like I'm going way off track in terms of progress but this is a necessary evil. I pulled the transmission last night and wrestled with the passenger side spring plate for way too long. that sucker just wouldn't come out. I'll bring out the big guns today.
The holes in the small nut reduction gear boxes had been tapped out, literally, by someone in the past. This will be the opportunity to swap them out with some good ones and weld up the massive holes in the spring plates....OR...upgrade to big nut boxes. I guess I have some decisions to make on engine size and gearing. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

a tipper huh? You're going all out *(as if you weren't already!)
Why not go for straight axle? A deluxe doesnt need ground clearance! _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

A lowered bus is not for me. If anything I would do a stock height IRS conversion but I think I'll keep the reduction gears. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru
