I'm seeing a lot of Ghias with speakers in the front kick panels, like in this one:
Are these custom or can you get them somewhere, or are they cut right into the body of the car? _________________ 1973 Karmann Ghia Convertible |

I've always made them, you can put whatever size you want into them. I personally make them out of wooden sticks, make a ring for the speaker to mount to, then use speaker grill fabric (I can't remember the name of it) but it's real stretchy, then staple it to the contours I want, and use some fiberglass resin to give them stiffness, and cover them in vinyl or whatever. The look great, and if done correctly give off some really good acoustics. |

Yup, I got mine from JBUGS and then ordered an extra yard of carpet with my kit to cover them:

I have used the ones from Glass Action on several cars. They work great and seem to have the best price - maybe because they actually make them:

The only thing to watch out for are the flimsy ABS plastic ones sold by some vendors. The speaker can make them vibrate. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

I bought a set of these and when I sit them against the door hinge pillar where the original kick panels went I end up with a large gap at the top on the inside edge of the panel. Do you have a photo of how you modified them to make them fit properly? _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

I think there are different makers of these panels . I can't remember where i got mine from, but the fit wasn't great. I could not get the carpet (TMI) to go around them without the carpet bulging in awkward ways. So i ended up covering them in matching seat upholstery . |

That panel is also your inner fenderwell. cutting a hole for the speaker there will also let your front tires share the tunes.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a speaker that's well suited to this location? (where you just KNOW it's going to get kicked at some point) _________________ '71 Ghia coupe |

Something from THIS Manufacturer would be appropriate for the task at hand? |

With the Glass-Action speaker panels I found it was a matter of mounting the speakers as high as possible while still having enough back space for the magnets. The Infinity 6000CS speakers I have mount on the outer surface of the panels so they stick out a bit, but I haven't had any short-legged passengers so kicking the speakers hasn't been an issue. YMMV |

I put mine in the door panels.
Keeps people’s feet off of them. |

Here’s how I did mine...
Made a cardboard mock-up, to test fit the speaker.
The magnet needs to miss the defrost tubes. The kick panel is a wainscoting panel from Lowe’s. _________________ Jay’s 1970 Coupe Resto

Question for you VERT guys....
What kind of Wattage output do you suggest for your audio device so you can hear it while on the freeway? I assume an additional AMP is in order. _________________ No Dents

If you're planning to cruise the freeways at 70mph with the top down I think you'll want at least a 4x100W amp plus a 400W amp for a sub if you're into bass (unless you go for the in-seat direct-to-spine system mentioned by BlueDot awhile back). Honestly, as much as I enjoy listening to my tunes, any time the top is down I find it's not so much about the hearing as it is the feeling... you know: the birds, sun, wind, road, dual Webers, exhaust |
