I have been reading the generator posts but would appreciate confirmation before changing the brushes. On a 6-volt generator (1957) with the thin narrow openings leading to the brushes, does the retainer plate have to be removed? If so, can the long housing bolts be removed without taking the fan and outer fan cover off?

Thanks

I forgot to ask - my generator works fine but is there anyone that rebuilds / restores them.

Thanks

... I'd bet there is a local electric auto parts rebuilder in a city near you. I once needed a generator rebuilt and converted from 6v to 12v... found a place called Shortys in Tulsa and he said my request was very common, years ago when he did a lot of air-cooled VW work... he did a great job,. at an agreeable price. Check your local yellow pages.

I do change my own brushes... easy to do.

you think he would of picked a better name for an electrical repair place than "Shortys"

Just sayin

i'd say he was under 5'... pretty short.

The double meaning, never dawned on me... clever.

Thanks everyone, but can someone please help answer my original question.? The generator has thin slits and does not look like the brushes can be changed without removing the long housing bolts.
