You might be better off just moving the plug wires.
The distributor drive has a washer on the bottom that can drop into the depths of the engine case. Which can require taking the engine apart to retrieve.
If you do re-index the dist drive gear. Only lift the drive gear up just far enough to turn the gear so the washer does not drop into the case.

Good luck

Yep, the distributor wasn't quite seated properly! It was still engaging though so the angle was incorrect (and it might have been slipping and changing) hence all of my attempts at timing were off.

It starts up now but idles at 5000+ RPM so I turned it off immediately. Off to learn about adjusting the idle on the carbs...

The idle circuit won’t support fuel for 5000 rpm..you’re throttle valve or linkage is loose, binding up , or disconnected entirely.

Is the spring attached ?

Check that the throttle cable is not too tight.

Yep, it was the throttle cable. Got it started again and ran it for 20 mins and then drove around the block.

It is still idling high at 1400 RPM even when turning the idle adjust screw all the way in so something else is wrong and needs tuning but at least the engine is back in and generally in working order. Thanks for the links and help.
