Was thinking about this problem all night. There were some washers along with the nuts for the rocker arm. I put them after installing the rocker arm assembly but can someone confirm if the washers go UNDER the rocker arm assembly? |
There are typically NO washers under the rocker arms. However, some have added them because the geometry necessitated them. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Sorry, I meant rocker arm assembly; where the assembly mates to the head. Do the washers go before installing the rocker arm assembly or after installing them? |

AFTER installing the rocker arms onto the two cylinder head studs. On top of rocker arm goes a washer and the nut; torque that correctly. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. It lives!! Thank you all for all your help! It turned out that the pushrod wasn't placed right somehow. Fixed that and reassembled it all this week. Cleaned out the heat riser and welded a rust hole on it. Also installed a new clutch as the old one was one without springs. Dad and I installed it yesterday and it runs great now. Haven't had a chance to run it on the street but idles and accelerates well in the air.
To sum up the problems the PO managed to: leave all the exhaust nuts loose and used permatex to fix the warped flange, bent an intake manifold stud and drilled too deep of a hole into the block, and had intake leaks on both heads. And it was still running! |

Well done and good news!
To close loop, you generally just pay the book rate or the actual hours rate, but no tips for replacing a cylinder head. _________________ .ssS! |
